do you actually do anything constructive towards this goal?? I'm refusing to pay my federal taxes. Well, actually not really refusing, but I'm not paying the $10,000 I owe on April 15th. I simply don't have the money. And I don't want to either, especially if we're at war. If we're not, then there's lots of other reasons not to that I can come up with. You appearently have a better paying job than I do if you are entitled to still owe $10K! Almost cleared $100K last year in contracts. And it's been a bad year. This year, I don't expect to do better than about $60K. After health insurance premiums and my son's tuition, that leaves about $49K. Putting away 20% of $60K for taxes leaves about $37K. Minus the 10K that I owe leaves $27K. This gives me a budget of about $2,250 per month, and my expenses, such as gasoline, utilities, cable Internet, web hosting, cell phone, car insurance, car loan, mobile home lot rent, and food are about $2000, leaving me with a safety margin of $250 / month. So much for saving anything. It also means that I have to bring in $5000 per month. Right now, that doesn't look doable but hopefully hours will come back as the boating season picks up (two of my clients are running boatyards, and you can read about the third one shortly in a new article! :-D ). Actually, my federal taxes were $20K, but I had almost $10K paid in W-2 income, the rest was 1099 income. I typically get a contract from a specific customer at the beginning of the year that I use to pay my taxes in April, but because of the economic downturn and other factors, that didn't happen. The day after I found out about my tax bill, and I was think, well, things are still OK, my main client told me he was cutting back my hours from 20/wk to a maintenance level 5/wk. That basically makes it impossible for me to pay the tax bill all at once. Oh well. It's not my problem. Yes, I should have saved 20% of my income last year for taxes, but I figured I'd be better off paying off some high interest debt. And I have absolutely no problem passing the buck on the government. Let them tell me what they think I should pay. Maybe I can negotiate a lower settlement payment. I've heard that's pretty common practice. Marc Help!
