Why does SUN not get capitalised ? It's an acronym, it should be S.U.N..... Anyhow, does anyone know what's going on in the Sun camp nowadays ? I'm learning J2EE, is it a spent force, or do they own the enterprise ? I tend to think they do own enterprise. More and more of my new projects are being done with J2EE or J2EE like technologies. Also, MS releasing .net has been a good kick in the ass for Java. Over the last 6-12 months we've seen more meaningful java advancements like Java Spaces and Struts. That being said, C# has absolutely hooked me on properties like a crack whore. The word abbreviation is awfully long for what it means.

Christian Graus wrote: What J2EE IDE do you use I use Eclipse for most of my work. Not really J2EE specific but nice and minimal. A lot of the co-workers use Borland and Sun One/Forté. Christian Graus wrote: and what database ? Whatever our clients want to use. A large majority of the work is done in Oracle. [sarcasm]In fact, I absolutely love PL/SQL[/sarcasm]. But we have done a few implementations using DB2 and MS SQL Server. The word abbreviation is awfully long for what it means.

Christian Graus wrote: or do they own the enterprise ? Nope. Last time I looked, that was still mainframes. Christian Graus wrote: Anyhow, does anyone know what's going on in the Sun camp nowadays ? J2EE is still on the up, but I've seen loads of projects where people are wanting to get off SUN equipment. One project was even called project SunSet. Got to love that. They are viewed as been overly expensive, while the Sparc processors are viewed as underpowered. Despite that , they are the leaders in terms of CPU scaling (72-128 or so processors in a Starcat 15000), but then you need it if the CPU's are not that fast, compared to say IBM's Power 4 CPU's. Also HP's SuperDome series is pretty quick of the mark. Interesting thing about the SuperDomes is that Windows will run on them shortly. If you have a look at SQL Server benchmarks on a 32 processor Unysis box it fly's. Also NEC have beefed up their offerings. Have a look at this. http://www.tpc.org/tpcc/results/tpcc_perf_results.asp[^] Genrally, non-clustered boxes are used in the enterprise. In the clustered section which can out perform the non-clusted by quite a bit, MS has it down to a fine art. Funny that MS is trying to move into the Big Iron, while Oracle & DB2 are trying to get good at clustering.
