Hey Chris, seen the new Canon EOS 10D[^]? Only $1499 for a pretty good digital SLR (body only of course.) DP[^] likes it as well. Even I, with South African Rands, could save up for this baby, just R11k. Not bad at all.

Dig cams all seem to have problems for the first 2 - 3 months of sales, after which they are safe to purchase. Also, in 6 months time they will probably bring out the 10Ds or 10Dv or something like that for £100 less, with a couple of added features. Patience, although it's a killer, is important in these things :)

Dig cams all seem to have problems for the first 2 - 3 months of sales Thanks for the info. I could only have enough money for it next year anyway lol. As you say the sub-versions of the product often contain important improvements. Like I heard you should not buy the Nikon D1 but rather get the Nikon D1X which is the D1 with a few but very important improvements. My boss is riding the Argus cycle tour this Sunday (every year he flies down from London without having done ANY training and does the Argus, this will be his 10th I think) and has asked me to take some photos. He is friendly with some London based South African online newspaper and he said they would want to put the photos up :-D Only thing is my turnaround time is going to have to be snappy. Something which a digital camera is perfect for. So on Sunday I expect I will be up early, blow two rolls of film on the start, rush to a photo lab, process it, scan to CD and then email to the paper. Sounds like fun :-D Unless someone knows of anyone here in Cape Town who can lend me a digital camera for Sunday? You don't know of a place that hires out digi cams here do you?

You might want to see if you can borrow a monopod though - I don't really like them myself, but they are much quicker than tripods to put up in action situations, and you might catch some real beauties :)

Weird huh? Her childhood was one big funny farm if you ask me. Her mom, when she was around, thought it best her little girl did not do boyish things like ride bicycles. Megan Forbes wrote: How was Cape Point? Looking forward to seeing those, and having my homesick heartstrings tugged Frustrating. Saturday was blissful weather. Had Sunday planned out. Wake up Sunday, clouded over and naturally most of the cloud was coming from the Cape Point area. So there goes Cape Point. Then about 4pm it all just starts vanishing revealing a crystal clear day by 4:30pm. Arrgghh! So instead I drove up to Lions Head and walked from there to Signal hill. I decided to try some panoramic photos of Table Mountain which I should be getting back this evening. Plus I am really annoyed with the photo lab I normally use. They charged R8 for every slide I wanted scanned to CD. I asked them and they said it was standard practice in Cape Town. So I bought that hook, line and sinker. Then monday I dropped off some film at another photolab closer to home that someone recommended. Turns out they charge the same for developing print film and scanning to CD as they do for slide film! Just R50 for a whole 36 frames! Ugh. So I am happy I found a cheaper place but pissed off that the other place was ripping me off. Megan Forbes wrote: Sorry, no. Oh it is common practice apparently, a lot of pro photographers do it. Naturally any equipment you rent is automatically insured so if you drop that R30k Canon telephoto USM L lens then you don't have to pay for it. Good idea, means I don't have to fork out money for things I only need once or twice a year. Just have to find a place close by. I know there are, just need a recommended one. I am sure there are plenty of places that do it in London. As for a monopod, not yet. Will make do with the tripod when I have time and handheld otherwise. I don't want to be bogged down with too much equipment come Sunday either.

Slick! I have been quietly watching this digital meets SLR stuff for a while. Now I just have to convince my wife that I *need* a third camera. THat should only take 12-14 months of begging. The word abbreviation is awfully long for what it means.

They can't sit on a range wich has just digital SLRs that cost more than most cars. So have no fear, I am sure within the next two months Nikon will make an announcement and you can use your Nikkor lenses.
