If there were another way, I'm sure myself and Dave would be the first to take it. But for now, BT is the only telecom company that will ever have a cabled broadband service in my area. Short of the satelite option, but I need upload speed too. Wireless ISP's will be in London first and then around the country a few decades later. As with anything, London gets it first, everyone else has to wait.

British Telecom own the country's telecoms infrastructure - they lay and maintain the cables - but I would defiantely be buying my service from a third party carrier. Other companies over here AFAIK do not roll out their own infrastructure, instead leasing it from BT. [edit] The physical side to BT has never been a problem to me - they maintian an excellent quality of service (even my Internet connection through them was better than it has ever been since elsewhere) - however their politics has pushed me away. British Telecom is in more debt than the average African state and firmly believe, like most of those African states, that the way to pay off the debt is through raping their customers for all they have rather than improving the service to their customers. BT have need no long term vision for their customers as they know they have a "quality" monopoly on the provider side of things, and that it would be by all means impossible for a competitor on that front given the costs, so the more service competitors the more customer-realted costs can be handed out and the more profit can be bought in. I just wish I could skip forward ten years or so to when the industry finally falls into a good equilibrium with their customers.
