And that's the point at which they lost me. Until we get the ability to deploy UWP apps to our customer's computers as easily as we can deploy proper applications - and without paying Microsoft for the privilege of doing it - UWP is a non-starter.

Why would anyone in their right mind want to do that?
- I would love to change the world, but they won’t give me the source code.
I see your point, but consider also we've few choices to avoid that. First off, although many users wish to stick to Win-less-than-10, the pressure is everyday greater. As developer, I found many troubles (still have) on supporting older OSes than newer ones. Secondly, it seems they adding new features (yet interesting) on the newest platforms, and that's reasonable. If you may afford to ship your apps/services without those news, then...yes, avoid any further upgrade. Ciao

Unlike in Win 8, you can freely sideload apps in win 10. Windows 10 Allows You To Sideload Universal Apps, Just Like Android Does[^]

It's a step in the right direction, but it's still not as simple as the "copy files to a UNC path and run the exe" method of deploying regular applications. :) Sideload LOB apps in Windows 10 (Windows)[^]
