I just noticed that someone signed up with a completely nonsensical name: http://www.codeproject.com/script/profile/whos\_who.asp?id=380857 Does some one go through and validate these? Personally I think that it is obvious that they have no intention of ever becoming a productive member of the CodeProject citizenry. I hate to prejudge, but I see nothing good form this, other than another potential article posted with a title longer than I have time to read.

it happens because people need to be logged-on to download stuff from CodeProject. so people create dummy users.

Doesn't that say something about the uselessness of the "logon-to-download" procedure? Or, more accurately, the "I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine" kind of data-mining, marketing nonsense that abounds on the internet.

The "logon-to-download procedure" was started to prevent bots and spiders downloading zip files and placing a heavy load on the servers and also eating up all the bandwidth, which has to be paid for by someone (Chris) in the end. Marketing nonsense my ass. Everyone knows 99.99% of the users are here just to be able to download stuff. Most of them probably leave after downloading the code from a couple of articles. But it at least prevents abuse of the servers and bandwidth.

Some time ago I was looking to buy a house. Most of the sites require you to "join" or provide some sort of information before you can see the list of houses. If a high-street store treated you this way, you would avoid it like the plague! When I am looking for a house, let me see the houses first. I'll contact you if there's one I'm interested in looking at - until then, you don't need to know anything about me. The same thing happened when trying to book a flight - You fill in all this information about yourself before they tell you if they even have any suitable flights! It's nonsense. Data-mining, marketing, email-collecting nonsense. I wasn't really complaining about CP - I was mostly just having flashbacks to some badly designed websites. Sorry if my previous post sounded a little weird - I wrote a huge paragraph, then deleted most of it and posted what was left. :-O btw, what kind of bots would be signing up at CP and downloading zip files?

So when you want to download something, please tell us your login email and password, and choose a display name. ;P You can leave the rest of the form blank. Is that too much to ask for, given the past experience of abuse by bots? Miszou wrote: I wasn't really complaining about CP - I was mostly just having flashbacks to some badly designed websites. OK, but here on CP you just have to provide the minimum amount of info. And none of that has to be correct. It's never verified. Besides, when you buy a car/house, or book a flight, you are paying. So you can dictate the terms. Here you are getting things for free. Not to say this means now you can be told what to do and what not, but in order to let it remain free for all and working as smooth as ever, we need to make slight adjustments and leave our paranoia about marketers behind. Filling out a small form, and even there only a few fields are necessary (a login "email address" and password + display name), is a small price to pay for all that you get here, IMO. A lot of marketing info that is for data mining, huh? What display name goes with what password. What password goes with what login email. How many people choose porn or code related words in their email address/password/display name, so that ads can be targetted at them. Etc etc. Miszou wrote: btw, what kind of bots would be signing up at CP and downloading zip files? The signing up to download prevented the bots from downloading files randomly. Now the downloading has to be dine by a human being, not a web spider or leeching software. This keeps CP relatively fast for genuine users like you and me. :)

You're right, it's BS to ask for personal information to show flight itineraries, but they have to ask that info in order to be able to give you a price quote. And since a lot of people want to see prices at the same time they see the flights, I can imagine why (in the particular case of flights) the site needs you to register first (I worked on the website for one of Europe's biggest airlines - I know about people complaining that they cannot see prices :( ) And would you believe how hard it is to make clear to people that they can see prices when they log in?
