Looking past "The Register's" usual hyperbolic descriptions: [^]

    Quote:

A pair of computer scientists have created a neural network that can self-replicate. “Self-replication is a key aspect of biological life that has been largely overlooked in Artificial Intelligence systems,” they argue in a paper popped onto arXiv this month.

Does random mutation and selection of fittest really mean any form of reproduction consistent with modern (post-Darwin, post-Gould) evolutionary theory ?

«... thank the gods that they have made you superior to those events which they have not placed within your own control, rendered you accountable for that only which is within you own control For what, then, have they made you responsible? For that which is alone in your own power—a right use of things as they appear.» Discourses of Epictetus Book I:12

Well, if the alternative is "Intelligent Design" via QA mutation, then ...

Bad command or file name. Bad, bad command! Sit! Stay! Staaaay... AntiTwitter: @DalekDave is now a follower!

Far out Griff; I never heard of mutation testing; I looked up a few .NET facilities; this text for Stryker [^] caught my eyes:

        Quote:

Imagine a sandwich covered with paste. Code coverage would tell you the bread is 80% covered with paste. Mutation testing, on the other hand, would tell you it is actually chocolate paste and not... well... something else.

@Walt-Fair-Jr Hi Walt, Recent electron microscope studies coupled with AI pattern recognition have discovered that AI asexual reproduction: 1. never uses upper case text 2. involves a prolonged period of virtual-chemical-hormonal foreplay accompanied by what appears to be excessively polite discussion of anything but the approaching act.
