Yep, you guessed it - I have one of these little treasures now for the first time in my life :(( . Obtained when walking under a bridge to photo Big Ben at night in March, I spent about 4 weeks wondering what could be causing the burning sensation in my ankle after each day's gym session, until it got really bad (I'm like that unfortunately). Eventually I decided to be sensible and ask someone about it - they said it's probably the tendon, rest it for 3 weeks. After 10 days it was feeling great - so I went back to gym. Cross trainer (minimal impact) in the morning, swimming at lunch time. Now it's really screwed :(( And just as I'm really starting to get fit too. Anyone got experience of this annoyance? How long did it take to heal? Is there anything one can do to help it on the way to healing? :(

One thing that I've found to help (and I get a lot of ankle trouble :-( ) is to put an ice-pack (i.e. something very cold) on as soon as you damage it, to bring the swelling out. After that, it's rest and (as you've learned to your cost :-( ) not getting back to exercise too soon. I've found that ankle supports (tubi-grips, support bandages) don't help me very much. You might find that gentle manipulation helps, to sort of re-stretch the tendons. Looking at your message, I'd guess the swimming would be OK, but crosstraining doesn't sound like a very good idea.... Having said all that, I guess I'm an extreme case - I fell off a ladder when I was 17 and fell on my feet (which was nice), damaging my ankles badly enough that I thought they were broken (which they weren't) and ever since that, they've been prone to damage. And, as I can't persuade myself to stop playing football, low level pain in my ankles is pretty much a constant... What a bummer! It's frustrating isn't it? Earlier this year, I started going to the gym, and was feeling good about myself, so I decided to try some indoor rock climbing. Well, that was going great until the end of my session, when I fell. It was only abbout 3 feet, and it was onto padding, but unfortunately my feet weren't steady on the very giving padding, and I sprained my knee. it was very painful. Well, my newfound enjoyment of working out had to be given up. I rested my knee (mostly), and it was getting better, until 2 weeks ago I got all excited during rehearsal (I've joined an improv group), and misstepped while acting out "murdering" my friend with an "axe". It's now finally getting back to where I can bicycle and attempt jogging again. It's difficult not to get restless about it and go do active things anyway. I've read that the knee can take up to 4-5 weeks to heal. I just haven't given it the proper time I think. I probably should have it looked at by a doctor. To be safe. Good Luck with your ankle. Get thee to a doctor, stat. You could have broken bones in there. I foolishly didn't go to a doctor after spraining my ankle and it took a year to heal. When I finally got it x-rayed years later, turns out the bones were broken and healed badly. Now my right foot is out of alignment and nothing I can do about it unless I want the bones re-broken. Even then, no guarantees. In general, to treat a sprained ankle, use RICE. Rest, ice, compression, elevation. Pack it in ice and see if that eases the pain. If not, use heat. Wrap an ace bandage around it. Resume weight-bearing activity, in gradual stages, as soon as possible. Do stretching exercises for the foot and lower leg using a "rubber band". A true sprain (no broken bones or damaged tendons) will heal in about 6 weeks. If you don't do anything, 3-6 weeks. To speed up the process, get some Chinese linament for treating sprains. It should work great. I use some Chinese linament for sore muscles after biking, and it works great. Go find a Chinese medicine doctor! Another thing about sprains (from my mother, a nurse), is keep walking on it to retain and recover the flexibility. Ouch! A knee must be extremely irritating. You are right - it's damned frustrating. Our doctor is crap - an old Greek guy who seems somewhat senile. He tried to put my husband on a 9 day course of antibiotics for a cold. However, due to the wierd system in England it seems I have to go to the doctor nearest to my house (can any UK CPian's tell me more about this?). Exactly what is an improv group? Sounds fun :)

The easiest way to explain what we do is to refer you to the show "Who's line is it anyway?" There is a series of games with made up scenarios, characters, etc. and we have to go the scene unscripted(improvisation). It's a blast, but I'm finding both very challenging and very rewarding. Right now we're just practicing, but we're hoping to get a weekly gig by the summer's end. BW "I always wanted to be somebody, but now I realize I should have been more specific." - Lily Tomlin

I was just going to say the same thing. Go to just about any asian food store and ask for Dit Da Jow. It smells terrible, but does accelerate the healing process.

The doctor will just give you some anti-inflammatories(if you can take them X| ) as pills or in a gel to reduce the internal swelling and the pain. There's not much else you can do:(

You can go to any surgery that serves the area where you live (in my town I've a choice of at least 3!) and is taking on new patients. Try giving NHS Direct or the Patient Advice Liason Service (PALS) a call. They might be able to advise you on your options. I've certainly found them to be friendly and helpful. :) Anna :rose: Homepage | My life in tears "Be yourself - not what others think you should be" - Marcia Graesch "Anna's just a sexy-looking lesbian tart" - A friend, trying to wind me up.
