Either this bug, or a similar one, goes back to Windows 7 where you sometimes couldn't change the "default" program.

One thing is when you can't change it, another thing is when it afterwards changes it back again on its own :rolleyes:

I just ran into this with my new Windows 10 machine. After a bit of looking online I either found the solution or it came to me while searching. Open the application as administrator you want to associate a file type with and associate the file types using the Windows 10 'Choose default apps by file type', or other appropriate Settings page. Problem solved.
