Linux vs Windows
-
Just read this interesting piece at Wired. Evidently there was a poll on the Best Operating System in which Windows NT/2000 won by a healthy margin. Problem was, Linux was leading until the last moment when there was a sudden surge in votes, leaving Linux with only 4% of votes. Linux users say Microsoft was stuffing the ballot box and that the poll was rigged. This produced a colorful response from the poll organisers who claimed that it was the Linux users who were actually stuffing the poll. It's been a while since I've seen some healthy Linux vs Windows heat so it amused me :) cheers, Chris Maunde

What a mess. I read through the articles you pointed to Chris, and it's amazing what a mud-slinging event this is turning into. Is the Linux crowd simply being more provocative? Trying to engage Microsofties in fight? I mean there have been tons of rival OSs in the past, and I don't remember them digressing to the point where someone like MSNBC.com would respond emotionally. Maybe the Internet is changing the way big business has to deal with issues and comments. I can certainly see why it's in LinuxToday's interest to stoke the fire, as a much smaller fish they are going to benefit from the exposure that having MSNBC.com's attention will give them. All the wrong people are throwing out very quotable lines that I'm sure will be repeated for months or years. Enough to make the PR managers at these companies cringe I'm sure

Hi Chris, I just about tossed my lunch reading that Wired story. I was laughing and in tears. Say do you kno if there is any truth to the story that the word 'root' has some derogatory meaning in Australia. Just asking because the whole Canadian Olympic team is parading around in outfits adorned by the sponser, 'Roots'? Chris (up in Canada

In Oz, "root" is, er, what two consenting adults do when they love each other very much :-O (how's that for a delicate explanation) cheers, Chris Maunde
Chris, I love your embarassed smiley face. What sequence of characters do we need to generate it? In fact, is there a list somewhere with all the available "face" character sequences? Thanks, Alvar

In an equally useful poll, 8-32 was chosen as the best screw thread, narrowly beating out M3
