Code Project Project (CPP) [UPDATED 5/31]
-
PLEASE READ THE COMMENTS SECTION Since I have taken the liberty of starting things, I will post thread management and CPP statements there. PLEASE no subthreads in any section except COMMENTS. I have added a new section, POLLS, which will be used to get specific user feedback. Please participate. First things first. Let's get a list of those that would like to be involved in whatever project we decide to do. Please reply to the VOLUNTEERS message below this one. No sub threads please. Also, if you reply in another thread, too bad. This will give us an idea of how many people we're dealing with. Secondly, we need to decide on the project that we want to make. Please reply to the IDEAS thread if you have an idea. Lastly, we need to decide on how we will control the project's source and distribution among the developers. Please reply to the SOURCE CONTROL thread if you have ideas for the best way to handle this. We will cut off project IDEAS (for CPP phase 1) on Monday June 2nd. If you have a great idea after that date, too bad. We'll use it for the next phase of CPP's if this first phase is a success. Also, I think we need to set a project initialization date so let's go with June 9th. This is the date we'll create the article and divvy up responsibilities. General comments to this idea, etc. should be posted in the COMMENTS thread below. Let's keep the thread "clean" so we won't get confused. I will take responsibility of monitoring this CPP thread pool and handing out initial duties until such time as we collectively choose our project leadership. THANK YOU!

Let me know what you need in terms of infrastructure. While we can't, in the short term, offer a SourceForg type environment I am more than happy to try and shoehorn whatever we currently have into whatever form is needed. Maybe there is a only a tiny change you need made for one of our systems to work a little better. cheers, Chris Maunder

I might add something... Please vote on the ideas using the message voting system we have in place here at CP. That might make things easier. Oh, and be nice.

How about writing a CodeProject book about programming desktop applications in .NET? The book would give you a good foundational understanding of how to use the main features/technologies of .NET & its BCL. Books that use the step-by-step approach sometimes just give you the steps, but don't tell you enough about why the steps should be taken and what they do, etc. Then there are the books that give you facts, put don't give you an example of applying them in a practical way. What I'd like to do is use a step-by-step approach, but explain the why's and how's along the way. Here's a sampling of topics. If enough people want this, we can make a more final list in an article. [asterisks denote topics I'd be willing to write for] BEGINNER: Console Apps * Clipboard Handling Printing ** Using the standard .NET controls Delegates & Events ** XML *** Resources** Fonts and Text *** File IO INTERMEDIATE: Sorting in .NET Registry Serialization * Graphics/Drawing *** COM Interop ** Shell Extensions * Data access Collections *** Threading * Remoting Attributes SubClassing *** Globalization/Localization Reflection ** The list above leaves some topics out. If there is a topic not listed that you'd really like to write for, go ahead and mention it.

That's a good idea. Because if you vote by replying, the thread will get 'way too big.

How about saying the name of the idea in the subject line instead. Thanks. ;)
