Sub/super script markdown

Is there a markdown encoding for Sub/Super scripts? The html tags <sub> and <sup> work fine, but I'm sure I saw somewhere was using ^1^ for 1. Even if there's not something like that available, can a note be added to the Markdown tips on sub/super script, for the next time I can't remember them? :)
