Because the notion that "women in combat" is a good idea is pushed by the left all the time. Most on the conservative side have the notion that it is total lunacy (which it is). Therefore, any time the (totally unbiased  )press gets the opportunity to validate their ill founded logic, they jump all over it. Then, when proven incorrect, they try to make it look like they were dupes of some sort of nefarious military conspiracy. This is clearly a left vs. right issue. "More capitalism, please..."

Stan Shannon wrote: This is nothing more than the Washington Post trying to cover its own ass for sloppy reporting. Actually, the article suggested cover up by the military or the government. The story was told by unnamed military source and no reporter has been fired for fabricating it yet. Here is a quote from the article (and there are plenty of places in the article suggesting the same thing): "Why did none of the other POWs talk about Lynch? Were they told not to? Certainly, Lynch's privacy about her ordeal needs to be protected. But the official curtain of silence has extended to everything about the incident from the start." Being a die-hard capitalist, you should have trusted the private organizations (media in this case) more than the goverment or the military, right? ;P

This might be a repost[^], I just read it. The original Post front-page story on April 3 was headlined "She Was Fighting to the Death." It reported, based on unnamed U.S. officials, that Lynch fought fiercely after her unit was ambushed, shot several enemy soldiers and continued firing until running out of ammunition and even after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds. She also was stabbed when Iraqi forces closed in on her position, the story said. I can't help thinking after reading, maybe we didn't go to the moon after all :(

There is nothing disgusting about getting the movie rights, if they don't make up the story. However, how do you know the media is responsible (for lying) in this particular case?

I feel that we have a strong tendency to want to take any event and wring out every tear, honor every courageous act, and package it all up into a nice marketable story documenting how the human spirit is alive and well. We don't give 2 shits about the people in the story, but man it sure is entertaining. It just really bugs me. About the lying, its almost a moot point to me. The media does, the military does, I do it, the church does it, what difference does it make when you get down to the details. You won't know the whole story ever anyway. Stan Shannon wrote: But the Post choose to use "unnamed officials" who told some post reprter what she wanted to hear. i'm sure that's the first time such a thing has ever happened in the history of journalism. but seriously, yes the Post got stung by an overheated reporter/unnamed source on this one. but i really think you're making a huge stretch to try to bring "left wing world view" into this. "squishy human interest story" or "overhyped feel-good ratings attractor", sure. but not everything is a partisan shot - really. try this: was the Post also playing into their right-wing world view when it ran stories on the first-night Shock and Awe bombing of Saddam's huge underground bunker? you know, the bunker that never even existed? i don't think so. Why is a girl fighting back a left-wing view of the world? I really don't get it. To me it sounds like for you the left wings and liberals and all non-republicans are the reason for everything that's screwed up in the world. Like, when I grew up, the imperilistische Kriegstreiber were the reason for everything bad. The post didn't run it because liberals like sissies fighting back. The post ran (and everyone repeated) it because american mind loves their heroes of war. It's the thing people want to hear. People. No righties or lefties. People.

Anonymous101 wrote: If GWB said "it is unlikely that Saddam has any WMD according to our intelligience", do you think the majority would still support the war? Doubtful. I was speaking more to the Lynch story, and others like it. The truth is important in certain aspects, of course. When my president makes a statement I want to be able to believe its true, although I can't always do that. The truth is a strange thing though isn't it? Even if we all told the truth as we believed it to be, we'd still have varying stories because of our varying points of view, our inability to wait for the all the facts, imperfect memory, etc. So even when we don't think we're lying we often fail to tell the truth. Sucks, huh? Pushing the notion that women make equally effective combat soldiers as men is a long standing position of the left. The image of Jessica Lynch cutting down Iraqi's like Sgt Rock, providing cover as her less willing and able male counterparts scampered for safety was one certain elements of the press were chomping at the bit to promote. IMO, some members of the military probably fed the press this misinformation as a joke - knowing what they would make of it. "Hell, she had an M-60 in each arm, and was spitting grenades out her mouth...". They're probably still laughing about it. peterchen wrote: I really don't get it. That's not a world view they wish to promote. "More capitalism, please..."
