Talking about the Alert Code being set to Orange: "I usually pay attention," said Virginia jewelry salesman Al Waiss. "If it's code orange, that's one step above green, right?" "I always pay attention, but personally, I get confused," said Raul Fernandez. "Maybe they should do it like the traffic lights — red, yellow and green." Excuse me, Raul. That's precisely how the codes are set up. They only expanded it with 2 other colors, orange and blue, which are placed quite logically. I get a little concerned about my fellow countrymen sometimes. :sigh: Article[^]

Why use color codes when you can just spell it out? Does the population need to have such fine grained information? 1) No terror threats 2) There may be bastards planning actions, call in anything suspicious 3) Terrorist attack imminent, call in anything suspicious and act yourself if possible -- Sancte Míchael Archángele, defénde nos in proélio contra nequítiam et insídias diáboli esto præsídium. Ian Darling wrote: red....yellow...green This would be simple enough in my mind too, but then again so is the current system. I think the issue here is that green signifies "all is well", and they don't want to send that message out. My question is, how do people who claim to "pay attention", either not retain the sequence of colors, or infer through news reports and reading the paper (or however they pay attention) what the status has been changed to.

I don't think we'll ever use the two most relaxed states(green/blue), so we could say the base, yellow or (1), means "normal chatter" or nothing imminent. Then we move up to (2) or (3) as threats become more probable. In any case, I think a sequence of colors is something a 6 year old child can remember, and it's a little troubling that adults, who claim to give a crap, can't take a few minutes to memorize it.

Las Vegas, ALMA and Consumer Electronics Show. One in-land stop. 5 levels - well, 3 "traffic light" levels would have been more american, if you take my meaning. It just sounded too much of "Code bright beige" of Star Trek spoofs.
