Okay, summer is over for us here in the UK, and I (we) have celebrated this event with a liquid lunch. There are only a few hours to go before the weekend, and since I've had a busy week; motivation is low. Fortunately, it's easy to look like you're busy when tapping on a keyboard. I plan on interspersing productive work with time on http://www.wired.com and http://www.theregister.co.uk, http://www.fool.co.uk and http://www.bbc.co.uk among others. Am I the only one who feels this way? Are you blokes in the Valley going to be working hard straight through as legend would have it? Are any of you in Australia living up to your reputations and doing the same thing as I am? Should I just call it quits and go home

[lunchtime jacksonville, florida] today is the last day of my contract, the last couple days i have been doing the odd rollout issue for my last little intranet-app, but mostly reading richter's programming apps for ms windows (you know, advanced windows v4) and surfing programming sites ain't contracting fun

Here, it has been raining since yesterday evening. Maybe it's the weather in combination with the "friday syndrome", don't kno', but for the past 2 hours, I have been staring at the trees through the window visualizing MY liquid supper. My colleges - hopefully - think I am solving an incredible difficult coding problem... Ah, Belgian trappist,... dark..mysterious..inspiring..sweet with a bitter aftertaste..here I come... (Have a nice weekend

On the east coast of the US most companies have "casual Fridays", an indulgence from H.R. which allows the MBA lemmings to be seen in the office without a suit and tie on Fridays

There's a chain of restaurants here called Belgos where they have a vast selection (100+) of real Belgian beer as well as Belgian food. While I enjoy the odd trappist (ooh er), I'm quite keen on a kilo pot of mussels with the clean sharp taste of Mort Subite. The good thing is that nobody minds if you make a mess eating your mussels. This is making me v hungry and thirsty... Is there an animated emoticon for drooling

G'day All, First, I'm an Australian who is living and working in Las Vegas. When I was in Australia, friday lunch was "the friday lads club" (of which I was the vice president) which involved going to the bottle shop, loading up some good beer and heading across the road to the chinese restaurant (where one of the waiters [whom we tipped handsomly] told us all the (private!) conversations of other people from out work that had occurred during the week! Friday afternoon was (for the most part) unproductive, just chatting with people to find out what they are going to be up to over the weekend. Now, flash to the US. Drinking is prohibited during working hours. Does this mean Fridays are any more productive? No, I don't think so. People just sit around doing sweet FA. I must say that I think the Australia model is much more benefitial, as I got to know everyone on the team much better, much quicker. We ended up working as a team better as well - as you knew everyone, and what they did, what their roles were, what questions you could get answered from whom etc. etc. All at the expense of a few drinks on a Friday afternoon (plus moral was up as well) Hmmm... Have fun, Paul Westcott

Hey Avizern, As an Australian currently in SF I feel a little torn as to what I should be doing - work hard all weekend or be true to my homeland and grab some beer, a comfy chair and watch some violent sport. In the end I did the best of both - took off friday afternoon (sorry to those who have articles that need posting!) but am now making up for it by working this weekend. I'm in Toronto sunday night (their thanksgiving) so will pay penance by working on their public holiday. Public holidays are are actually really difficult if you travel. Do you take your homelands holidays? Your host country's holidays? Both? None? Another weird thing is the thought of working in a job where all you can do is think about the upcoming weekend is so depressing, and I hope I never have to be in such a job. I was talking to someone about this very thing last night and we were waxing lyrical about how nice it is to be in an industry where you don't mind working on weekends, and equally have no problems taking a day or half-day off in the middle of the week. It's strange how the work ethic has changed. We may turn up late for work, or play hookey and take a day off, but at the end of each seven days you still find that you've done 60-70hr

When I lived in Greece Friday afternoon was the unproductive/hookey day, especially when the boss was leaving late. Working in Israel for four years there is no such thing as Friday Afternoon. There is such thing as Thursday Afternoon and yes it is unproductive and by 17:00 there are no QA guys to talk to. See in Israel the weekend is on Friday and Saturday and on Sunday back to work.... confusing?? Also from Friday afternoon to Saturday afternoon everything is closed (including public transportation!) so Friday morning is a shopping race for whatever you need... still confused?? Think you can go shopping on Thursday evening??? Join the traffic jam and long lines on 711s and super markets... And all that in a perfectly traditional unorganized Israeli way. I envy you guys..
