No child left behind...... The question is "should we enforce standards in public schools"...wrong question. Real question is "should we have public schools" Liberty

...and, apparently, the answer is "yes".

But in the end, it's all just database access right? And that stuff is just plain boring.

I'd rather watch a "State of The Onion" address :-) At least that would be intentionally funny ;P -- Ian Darling "The moral of the story is that with a contrived example, you can prove anything." - Joel Spolsky

Interestingly, my wife, who is a citizen and can vote, said tonight, 'I don't want to watch the State of the Union address'. When I reminded her that a year ago she had inflicted it on all of us in this house she was somewhat embarrassed. I'm suspecting one of two alternatives. Either she's embarrassed by what the current administration has done over the past year (she's a republican) or I've had an influence on her. Those aren't mutually exclusive of course :) Examples over the past year: My 12 year old stepson enthuses over the World Series*. 'What countries participate in the world series?' ask I. He's stumped. Then I describe two other world series. International Cricket and the Soccer World Cup. Hmmm... suddenly we have a 12 year old US citizen who knows that the USA isn't the only country in the world :) My 15 year old stepdaughter confided in me a few months ago that she'd decided that running for president was no longer attractive. Why? Apparently I've convinced her that not only is the USA not a democracy (it's a republic and that's a somewhat different animal**) but she's seen that even people not*** predisposed to dislike the USA have their doubts about US foreign policy. I really don't want to discourage her aspiring to high office (and she has all the support I can give her) but I've got her thinking and that is a start. *I think he means Baseball but who can tell? **My wife tells me that US kids are taught this in school. ***I said not predisposed. If I was predisposed to dislike the USA I wouldn't be living here now. Rob Manderson http://www.mindprobes.net **Paul Watson wrote:**What sense would you most dislike loosing? Ian Darling replied. Yeah, I was trying to decide whether to watch the Jetsons or 'The Barbarians', instead. Anything is better than dubyas blathering. :-D

I was watching the Barbarians, myself :) Very well done show, IMHO. A few of the major events and historical tidbits were glossed over, but overall, a good comprehensive look at the culture and impacts. Jeremy Kimball
