Relative Font Sizes
-
Seeing as this is a RAVING column as well I thought I would just shout a huge WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. I finally got a complex website design to use relative font sizes (i.e. font-size: small as opposed to font-size: 11px) without breaking or looking funny at the extreme ends of the font size scale. (you know, when you go View, Text Size, Largest or Smallest). Let me tell you this is no small feat. Just go to major websites and see if they support changing the font size without falling over. The website has to be compliant with all manner of accessibility guidelines and one of the guidelines stipulates relative sizing on fonts must be used. I thought I was going to have a heart attack. But I did. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO There we are, ahem, rave over :) yes I know you CPians won't understand my reason for being so chuffed but web developers will, hey Chris? regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass Cape Town, South Africa "The greatest thing you will ever learn is to love, and be loved in return" - Moulin Rouge "In other words, the developer is dealing with an elephant, the accountant is dealing with a bunny rabbit." by Stan Shannon - 16/10/2001

Damn skippy we will understand!!! Good job Paul! *applause* I am a BIG accessibility freak, I go to great lengths to not exclude poeple and browsers. I go far enough with it that I usually annoy the s**t out of my co-workers. Even so, I frequently give up on the relative font size guidelines. It is such a pain in the arse getting that to work consistantly. Does it work in NutScrape also? You're a more patient man than I am! I've tried (Lord, how I've tried) but there's always *something* that throws everything out. It's been on my TODO list for about 15 months now :( cheers, Chris Maunder (CodeProject)

Does it work in NutScrape also? Yup I got it working on: - IE 4.0, 4.01, 4.5, 5.0, 5.5, 6.0 (Mac and PC) - Netscape 4.08, 4.75, 4.76, 6.1 (Mac and PC) While it is a bit messed up I managed to make it readable even in version 3 browsers. The trick I found was to use different style sheets for each browser and platform while leaving the HTML structure the same. Also I found that every single space and character must be enclosed by a CSS style so that every part of the page is "styled" to a relative font size. That way everything shrinks and expands in the same way. I frequently give up on the relative font size guidelines All our projects before were "optional relative font size use". But this one is "relative font size use not optional". It is a project-breaking milestone if it does not work at virtually all text sizes. It took a week to put together just the template but it should be worth it :) Now I need a strong shot of Stoh Rum and a long sleep hehe regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass Cape Town, South Africa "The greatest thing you will ever learn is to love, and be loved in return" - Moulin Rouge "In other words, the developer is dealing with an elephant, the accountant is dealing with a bunny rabbit." by Stan Shannon - 16/10/2001

You are correct sir! If anything deserves a w00t this does, in fact it deserves a w00t!!! :-D Jason Jystad Cito Technologies www.citotech.net >------------------------------------------------< "Luckily," he went on, "you have come to exactly the right place with your interesting problem, for there is no such word as 'impossible' in my dictionary. You sir, are quite simply the man. I have gotten so used to using CSS and the occasional DHTML that any time someone asks me to do a page that is 3.x compliant I get the shakes. ;P Jason Jystad Cito Technologies www.citotech.net >------------------------------------------------< "Luckily," he went on, "you have come to exactly the right place with your interesting problem, for there is no such word as 'impossible' in my dictionary.
