thanks for the link. I have family in upstate NY, didn't realize that midwest emmissions hit them like this. So that's why they call Africa the Dark Continent... Some people think of it as a six-pack; I consider it more of a support group.

Apologies if this is a repost. The image[^] is a panoramic view of the world from the new space station. It is a night photo with the lights clearly indicating the populated areas. You can scroll East-West and North-South. Note that Canada's population is almost exclusively along the U.S. border. Moving east to Europe, there is a high population concentration along the Mediterranean Coast. It's easy to spot London, Paris, Stockholm and Vienna. Check out the development of Israel compared to the rest of the region. Note the Nile River and the rest of the "Dark Continent". After the Nile, the lights don't come on again until Johannesburg. Look at the Australian Outback and the Trans-Siberian Rail Route. Moving east, the most striking observation is the difference between North and South Korea. Note the density of Japan. What a piece of photography. It is an absolutely awesome picture of the Earth taken from the Boeing built Space Station last November on a perfect night with no obscuring atmospheric condition. Then you have the environmental whak-jobs that say "Oooooh, but why measure "progress" with electricity consumption?!?!?" Wow! You can really see the Scottish Central Belt stand out. If you look at the British Isles and go about 2/3 up you'll see a bright belt of light going from the east coast to the west coast. There is also a line of light tracing the east coast from Dundee through Aberdeen and then to Inverness tracing a kind of arrow, there is nothing in the West Highlands. Also, I've spotted a little gap on the south coast of Spain. Wahay! A bit of the Costa del Sol without so many tourists! Curiously I've noticed especially in the American Mid-west that the lights appear at quite regular intervals. I knew that the grid layout was popular for American cities, but I didn't realise the entire country was aligned so much in that fashion.
