I use Outlook Express for accessing newsgroups. It is much better. Newsgroups have well defined protocol and port number that can be easly banned. Or may be this forum has not come under their scanner, If they ban codeproject.com I will be the first one to mail the vice-president of the company.

Fair enough. If that was the case for you 8 years ago, then I can only assume that every ISP who has offered connections in Tasmania has had a "crappy newsgroup service", at least up until I stopped using it. Christian I have drunk the cool-aid and found it wan and bitter. - Chris Maunder

I have only been using newsgroups for about 5 years. I am somewhat sceptical that you actually tried every Tasmanian ISP, but would not be surprised if most and perhaps even all Tasmanian ISPs offered a crappy newsgroup service 8 years ago. Newsgroup servers consume a huge amount of bandwidth in downloading messages from around the world. This is a fixed cost independent of the number of ISP customers who use it. For this reason, small ISPs tend not to provide a decent service and may not even provide one at all (in such cases, newsgroup addicts are forced to buy newsgroup services from a 3rd party provider). My current ISP provided an unusable service when I joined it about 2 years ago so I did pay for a 3rd party provider, but the ISP was taken over not long after by a larger ISP and now has a really good service. A Windows programmer has things easier than most. You can connect directly to Microsoft's news server for free at msnews.microsoft.com This carries hundreds (possibly even thousands) of microsoft newsgroups. For me (and probably for almost everyone) it has a lag of about 2 minutes between when you send a post and when it appears.
