          http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=amateur&r=67 By the first definiation amateur means someone who does not get paid. A hobbiest doing it for the fun of it. Compare to a professional who gets paid to program. Many people now use the 3rd definition: that an amateur is someone who does a poor job. (note that the origion of the word inplys the opposite - an amateur is better) Often you can tell from context. If you can't, I prefer the first, though I'm out numbered in the real world.
