Like: Home Depot Of course, my 13 year old son, who doesn't know French yet, pronounced it "deepot" (with a hard T at the end). Which is what got me thinking about the whole French/freedom thing. Of course, now someone is probably going to point out that the word Depot comes from Swahili or something. :-D Oh and--they were interviewing some fellow on NPR's Science Friday last Friday, and he said that all the countries where hurricanes occur get to pick a name for the list each year. Heh, Chirac doesn't strike me as someone who would just invade. He may have bombed the crap out of small atolls in the Pacific, but at least he had the atolls evacuated first. :-D -- ...Coca Cola, sometimes war...

I have a former colleague who boycotted everything made in France during that "crisis". Unfortunately he was a prejudist which couldn't differentiate between France's government and the people of France. :sigh: -- ...Coca Cola, sometimes war...

And he has not even the excuse to be American I suppose... yep, this one was easy, but I try to never miss a tackle when possible. I should perhaps add some kind of indication I'm joking? Nah, too lazy...

I'll give you about 1200 words from French that exist in English with one simple rule. The vast majority of words ending in -tion.

And in French, we have words that come from English words which come from French... eg: "flirter" < "to flirt" < "conter fleurette". The meaning of the three is almost the same. Callixte.[^]

It works very well when the word has 3 syllables or more. I don't remember finding a case where the "direct translation" doesn't work.

I can already picture the headlines... "France closes in on US as residents prepare" "France leaves wake of destruction in Florida" "Residents fearful as France approaches"
