OMG! http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/3744226.stm 'Imagine finding unexplained condoms around your house and then waking up one night to find your partner having sex with a stranger. It might sound like an affair, but what if your 'cheating' partner was fast asleep during the act? The phenomenon, called sleep sex, was described to doctors at a meeting in Australia. Mr Buchanan told the Australasian Sleep Association how a patient of his, who was a respectable middle-aged woman with a steady partner, would leave the house while sleepwalking and have sex with strangers. The woman was totally unaware of her double life until her partner became suspicious and found her engaged in the act. "He was aware of some sleepwalking and there was circumstantial evidence, including the unexplained presence of condoms around the house," Mr Buchanan told the conference.'

I'm curious about where these strangers come from - are sleepwalkers aware enough to unlock the front door?

funny, i had just finished reading this right when you posted this article. quoted from article The woman was totally unaware of her double life sounds like a bunch of horse-cucky to me. a.) this woman wanders out into the street and coincidentally runs into what, another sleep sexing man? granted, it may not be that difficult for women to get sex when they want it, but going out and finding a willing participant in your sleep, with what, no conversation? This sounds like a bad porno to me. b.) let's say hypothetically there was a bit of legitimacy to this. the random condoms laying around the house didn't send some sort of a message to her, or at least leave her with some questions? (i.e. uhhh where did these condoms come from?, why are there used filthy condoms all over the floor?) i'm not thoroughly against the ideas presented by the doctor and sometimes i'll wake up in the middle of the night and notice that i'm talking, so i don't think that having certain things happen in dreams and physically acting them out at the same time is that far fetched... but come on, seriously.

I have a 13 year old niece who sleepwalks, and it's pretty scary. She has hurt herself on more than once occasion (once by pulling a full-length mirror off the wall) and has also gone walking outside - you know, night-time in her bed-clothes - VERY worrying for her parents. She sometimes talks too, and when confronted, you'd be hard pushed to know she is actually asleep. Therefore, having seen a sleepwalker in action, I think "sleep sex" is a possibility (though in this case it does sound a little fishy!).

Yes, they are. They also have no recollection of events the next day. I have seen it - it is very bizarre to watch, I can tell you! (the sleepwalking that is, not the full-on stranger sex!).

Occams razor says BZZZ!. Forgive me for being a little bit skeptical in the face of such obviously flawless medical research. But there are at least two simpler explainations:

              • Someone wants a new disease named after them
              • Someone wants a big fat grant to 'research' middle aged nympomaniacs.

              Ryan.

It's yet another shock to our system to discover that not only are we not the centre of the Universe and we're not made of anything, but we started out as some kind of slime and got to where we are via being a monkey. It just doesn't read well.

'research' middle aged nympomaniacs. Hmm, I wonder if a grant could be obtained for studying 20-30 year old nympomaniacs? ¡El diablo está en mis pantalones! ¡Mire, mire! Just to pick up on one thing: Jim Matthews wrote: and finding a willing participant in your sleep, with what, no conversation? There is nothing to say you can't talk when sleep walking. I have a friend who will very rarely have conversations with you while he is sleeping and not remember them in the morning. He made me coffee once - and I don't drink the stuff. It is quite astonishing to be there; he sits up and looks at you and acts completely normal. You can only tell that he is sleep-walking and not consciously awake because if he is asleep he wont appear tired as if he had just woken up.
