I don't see any conflict between me refering to myself as african (i care very much about africa and its people) and at the same time upholding american ideas. You have no idea the debate i find myself in with others, trying to defend those american ideas, many of which the people i debate with find to be sacrilegus at best. Being american to me is about upholding those ideas not just having the label on yourself. I have encounted many people who call themselves americans and have no respect for those very ideas that define america. As for my supposed unappreciation for being in america, oh! if you only knew. Patriotism to me again is about action not just hyper-emotional jingoistic-flag waving. Patriotism is defined as love for country, country is supposed to be more about the people not the physical land, yet i see people who call themselfs patriotic and don't have any care for their fellow citizens (no, i personally don't need uncle sam's help but there're people who legitimately do). Looking for me in cyberspace? I am the electron with the red hat, occupying 3rd sit on the left of the data bus. by the way, perl stinks. Then why call yourself an African? I really don't mean any offense, but you either are an American or you aren't. As for what being an American means, I agree that it should involve actions also. I spent nearly 9 years in the Navy, I feel that I have done that. Do I think everyone needs to do the same thing or thnk the same thing that I do? Of course not... but I see that a lot of people exclude the possibility that someone else's opinion is as important or as valid as theirs. Someone who acts in that way is not someone I would want as a fellow citizen or neighbor. As for the "hyper-emotional jingoistic-flag waving", I see little wrong with taking pride in our country so long as we can be realistic about its shortcomings. I'm struck by the fact that I live in a country where John Kerry and George Bush can both attend an event with several other politicians of both parties and everyone's reaction is "Yeah so what would you expect?". In many other places or times that would not be possible, but here it is accepted as a matter of course. If someone feels badly that their cantidate loses the election, they can take comfort in the fact that they will have the oppurtunity to select a new one. That is a wonderful thing about this nation. mystro_AKA_kokie wrote: Patriotism is defined as love for country, country is supposed to be more about the people not the physical land, yet i see people who call themselfs patriotic and don't have any care for their fellow citizens (no, i personally don't need uncle sam's help but there're people who legitimately do). I would agree with you here, but personally my belief is that we should help one another rather than relying on others to do it. Call me naive, but a bureacrat rarely tends to show compassion, and human nature isn't always at its best, but in general Americans come through in a pinch. I don't know how you teach people to take responsibility for their family, their neighbors, or their community, but Americans aren't the only ones to fall short here I'm sure. So I guess it all boils down to overall this is a pretty damn good place to live, and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. First of all i did not accuse anyone of being a "good ole boy" and i have no reason to believe any of them are. However i do know that the image of them being together looking like "good ole boys" does bring a great deal of comfort to a substantial portion of the american population, those people who believe the hispanics are taking over for instance. Secondly i don't know about you but i do think that it is still a shame that america hasn't had a female or non-white president, not because of a lack of qualified candidates but because people for whatever irrational reason are uncomfortable with the idea. Name the candidates. Also at 24 you are far too young to have an opinion that anyone should would or could listen to. You are at that idealistic age when every thing seems so clear and the answers so obvious - wait until you are 45 or so and you will see that you not only didn't have the answers - you didn't even know the questions. Yea I know - it won't happen to you. Doug, C'mon, bro, isn't America about looking at our flaws and faults so that we can become a better nation? You're not suggesting this is as good as it gets, are you? Best, Jerry

Because she's republican? probably, because she has a phd? that would actually be a plus in my book. I think the make-up of the congress is what needs to change first, otherwise any non-white president am afraid wouldn't feel empowered and probably end up just a poppet. It wouldn't matter which party in congress has a higher percentage of non-white representatives but i think a much higher minority representation overall would be essential psychologically for the success of any non-white president. Minority representation would ( will ) improve if more and more of the minority become Republicans. However with Hispanics representing about 12.5% of the population and African Americans about 12 % and Whites about 71% it remains a matter of concentration of population. Since the majority of the so called minorities live in the South it would behoove them to align with the party that is in power in the south - the Republicans. As long as minority voters keep on blindly voting Democratic they are gonna have a problem. This will change over time as more and more of the population becomes non white but the majority of the increase in non white population will be hispanic and hispanics are much more in tune with Republican party than non hispanic minorities.
