The most important factor might well be that, being on welfare, they are not required to do anything that might actually require them to burn calories. Make them to go out and work for their income, and you might see them sliming down quite a lot.

I grew up in a family of construction workers - men who never lifted weights but had very tough, rugged builds. That is something you don't see a lot these days (not that I spend a lot of time checking out the builds of construction workers :~ ). Still, I remember that my dad ate three huge meals a day. My mother put breafast, dinner and supper on the table and they all consisted of very generous amounts of fatty, fried and starchy food. Yet, while certainly not skinny, the man was not obese either (although he did have a fatal heart attack at 63). There are a lot more fat people in this generation than there was in that generation - and I think the big difference is the amount of physical labor we have to expend to put food on the table more so than the quality of the food itself. I think setting around watching soap operas while draining a bag of chips and a gallon of soda paid for with food stamps will probably put weight on pretty dang fast.

A lot of people in the USA beieve terrorism is the greatest threat. I'll agree it is an immediate threat but I believe another threat is floating to the top and will be the great longterm threat. But some scientific stuff I have been reading has got me thinking. In short: If a rat is starved or overfed then the next generations will either be smaller or obese. This can last up to 5 generations, and what appears to occur is that certain genes are turned off or on to influence the offsprings natal state. There is strong reason to believe what happens in rats happens in humans. In the western world obesity is become a big issue especially amongst the poorer segments of the community, this transcends race, religion, or political beliefs. Yes you can have fat, hispanic, protestant, libertarian persons as easy as any other grouping, as long as they are poor. And the poor are also the greatest breeders of our future inhabitants and workers. However the problem facing the future will be will Americans be too fat to work, to go into the military, to fit in polling booths. I haven't got the figures to do the math but I'm sure in 50 yrs there is going to be a serious crisis in the USA with this. The only saving grace is the inflow of immigrants who will be slim enough to perform. However evidence already suggests that their American born children will also suffer from obesity. Part of this problem stems from the serious urbanisation of America - I have been doing a bit of a personal study that shows that the greater the urbanization process is the higher the obesity percentage is. Already the results are showing 'good' results on a number of levels. (micro & macro). Northern Europe, Canada, Australia, NZ are in many ways no different from the USA. However they are not the leaders of the free world. So if the USA falls to obesity they will not be far behind. An easy solution to the supersizing of the USA alludes me, those I can think of are - Deurbanization programs, Fat product taxes, Education and welfare systems, Healthy food stations in inner city areas. None of these are likely to be practible or are what legislators are likely to promote and endorse. So my personal conclusion is that the western world will fall to fat long before the war on terrorism can be won. Regardz Colin J Davies Attention: It's finally arrived, The worlds first DSP.

As a solution, i say make the environment exercise friendly. Make broad side walks available on every city street and on every neigborhood street. Companies must start looking seriously into ways to keep people from spending long hours at desk jobs (these are the jobs available in the modern job market), such as much shorter hours where people can do their jobs efficienty in short time spans and also invest in telecommuting so people can work from where ever they choose to. Make major investment in vast public transportation systems so people do not spend as much time riding in cars as they currently do.... Looking for me in cyberspace? There are over 40 million poor people in the US, i don't think the amount of people who collect welfare come anywhere close that number. Besides it seems the middle class is as equally fat. Looking for me in cyberspace? I am the electron with the red hat, occupying 3rd sit on the left of the data bus. by the way, perl stinks. Do you really think it makes any difference what kind of transportation people sit on their buts in? Better mass transport is a good idea for other reasons, but I hardly think it would make any difference to this problem...Closing the streets to all powered vehicles would help more, bicycles burn fat, not oil. But others in this thread have posted opinions that obesity correlates to poverty in a positive way in western society. That is the observation that I was responding to. My oberservation would be that any society in which the poor's primary problem is eating too much is a society that has achieved something rather remarkable.

We need to be careful with our observations here. I remember a video from school (mid 60's) about poverty and it noted the much higher obesity rate. Many poor in the study had potatoes every meal and often little else. So they had the starch to get fat but, not the balance to be healthy strong workers, the diet did lead to some of the laziness. But yes they were not starving to death, step one. I do not mind getting old. It beats all the other options that can think of.

I suggest that we implement mandatory liposuction for the obese. Not only would we save America, but by recycling the byproducts we can also eliminate any conceivable need to harvest another whale. For that matter, through the magic of fractional distillation, we might also find a solution to the worldwide petroleum shortage, thus eliminating the need to annoy religious fanatics who happen to live on top of large oil reserves and, hopefully, reducing the motivation behind terrorism.;) "If it's Snowbird season, why can't we shoot them?" - Overheard in a bar in Bullhead City
