Mental Health Screening for Kids[^] Psychiatric Times[^] Maybe it is just me, but does this sound like something out of one of Orwell's books? Forced mental health tests for teens and postpartum women? And this passed by a wide margin in congress. OK we had Columbine and some postpartum depressed women killing their infants. But that is a handful of crazies in a land of 300 million. The Bush Admin. are trampling on everyones rights and creating yet another expensive boondoogle program for their cronies.

From the first article: Illinois became the first state to jump on board. By near-unanimous votes in 2003, the General Assembly passed the $10 million Illinois Children's Mental Health Act creating a Children's Mental Health Partnership, which is expected to become a model for other states. Run! Run like the wind! Do not slow down and do not turn back! If it can be screwed up... Illinois will do it. If it can be corrupted... Illinois will do it. I'm betting the full $10 million was pocketed before the ink was even dry on the check. The partnership's plan, released July 16, calls for periodic social and emotional developmental examinations to be administered to all children, and for all women to be interrogated for depression during pregnancy and up to a year postpartum. When the partnership showcased this plan with five public hearings stacked with bureaucrats and social service workers, a political tempest erupted, with state legislators saying they had no idea this was what they had voted for. Politicians should learn to read what they are voting for, its the least they can do. I have said before that you cannot depend on politicians to read every bill, but they should read a few of them just to honor the paycheck you know. A follow-up visit for new mothers isn't Orwellian, and treating mental health along with physical health during wellness visits isn't outrageous. I don't think the government should have anything to do with it, and the mental problems are probably better fixed by promoting family life and better child care rather than more shrinks and drugs, but I don't think the initiative, which is obviously going through growing pains anyway, is a harbinger of the death of our freedoms. He is supported by the entrenched HIGHLY Democratic Cook County board and the enormously Democratic Chicago city alderman. I remember as a kid growing up being told how the communists in the Soviet Union take children away from their homes and dictate how parents raise their children, etc. But it appears it is the US that seems to be becoming the world leader in such issues. (obviously an exageration on my part). But it drives me nuts when I read such stuff and worse when I meet some moron who believes it is the right thing to do. On a lighter side.... I wonder if Bush would pass the test... LMAO
