Brokaw Astonished Over NYTimes Reporter Being Banned By White House Tue Nov 30 2004 10:09:36 ET Outgoing NBC anchorman Tom Brokaw was asked on MSNBC's HARDBALL Monday if the Bush White House has been tough with the press corps, citing as an example of Dick Cheney stipulating no NEW YORK TIMES reporters on his trips. Brokaw said, "I think they have been too tough. "The idea that this White House has not given Tom Friedman a long, in-depth interview is astonishing to me. I have had a very good relationship with them, I have gotten to interview the President a lot. I have had access on the phone and other areas and I have been very vigorous in my discussions with them. But no reporter that I know covering national politics and the international policies that are of such great concern today know as much about them as Tom Friedman does and they have completely shut out the NEW YORK TIMES." No doubt for the same reasons I cancelled my NYT subscription. Mike "liberals were driven crazy by Bush." Me To: Dixie Sluts, M. Moore, the Boss, Bon Jovi, Clooney, Penn, Babs, Soros, Redford, Gore, Daschle - "bye bye" Me "I voted for W." Me "There you go again." RR "Flushed the Johns" Me

No doubt for the same reasons I cancelled my NYT subscription. Because political dissent is no longer part of a healthy democracy, but is now considered aiding and abetting terrorism? :|

No. I cancelled because they printed opinion as news. What they do on the front page and continuing into Section A largely belongs on the editrial page. I decided to vote with my wallet and told them why when they called to complain ask why. I am fine with dissent, but not when it (dissenting opinion)is portrayed as news. Sorry, I should have actually said that your choice of newspaper is your own business. If enough people don't like what they print, then they'll have to change and that's the way it should work. My comment was directed toward barring NYT reporters. Whether the govt or anyone agrees with their point of view shouldn't matter.

If I say, "We lost more men in today's battle than I would have liked to have seen" and the reporter/NYT prints, "Pentagon decries massacre" then I think it just dandy that the NYT be excluded. another example is the saturation reporting of the "abuses" at Abu Grahib when the actual abuses were minimal. Just because you don't agree with their dissenting opinion doesn't make them wrong. I don't like right-wing media, but that's no justifications for barring them either. What should happen is, if NYT is indeed biased past the point of being sensible, then other media outlets should call them on it. Most people do care about the reliability of their news.

You aske me its a shame that the administration could not just defend their actions rather than throw press members out of the loop altogether. I know that if I were in GWB's position I'd rather present my case and win validation. But hey throwing them out the white house works too, just like when he makes sure that demonstrators are a safe "4-5 block" distance from him. How can you trust a man who "shoos" away anyone who disagrees with him?
