wow, a new low for U.S. cable news: they were interviewing some vatican "expert" on CNN and asking him about the "front runners" for new pope. After each man was listed by the "expert" the anchor would ask if they were "to the left or the right" and the "expert" would, each time try to explain tactfully that there was just a little bit more complexity to it than that and that those terms didn't really apply in this case which seemed to go right over the anchor person's head and she would again ask that question only worded slightly differently when the next candidate came up.

What do you expect from those lefties at CNN? ;) Seriously, though, this constant categorizing of everything as being liberal or conservative is way out of hand. As though it were possible to sum up anyone's stand on all issues simply by stating they are right or left. It's absurd. BW

I'm not sure, but IIRC, followers of the Church of England may have been excoummunicated with Elizabeth I, and I doubt a heretic may apply for the job...

Technically any baptised catholic male can get the job, right? I've already been baptised (as a traditional celebration of birth rather than for religious reasons), so how do I go about registering as a catholic so I can send my CV in? (Does it matter that the church I was baptised in was probably C of E?) The bit about the palace sounds great. I can't wait to see the bathroom!

Am I the only one offended that every pope has been Catholic? Where is the diversity, the multi-culturalism Europe is so famous for? Why not a protestant pope, a buddist? :wtf: "The Yahoos refused to be tamed."

I think only cardinals may apply...but if you start now to engage in the Catholic Hierarchy, maybe you have a chance for the next election.. good luck! :-D David Wulff wrote: The bit about the palace sounds great. David's actually right - all you need to become Pope is to be baptised Catholic. Therefore I announce my candidacy to run against David!

Last I recall, Europe didn't control the catholic church. And what if they tried? You'd be up in arms screaming about how the "commies" are forcing their will on the church.
