And given the low wage, if that kid is good, he'll be gone as soon as he gets enough experience to be noticed by someone who does pay a good wage. Certainly low wages decreases both the level of competancy of the applicants, or decreases the level of respect the applicant has for the employer both. I was kidding: I guess its relative to where you are living, what you are doing, etc, etc. I earnt a lot less than that (5.25) when I started working many, many, many moons ago and still managed a healthy social life although (foolishly) I never saved a penny. Hopefully $50k is a reasonable living wage in that part of Canada.

For 50K Canadian a year you'd find dozens of good programmers here in Brazil. Too bad none would understand english perfectly.;)

Maybe it's just the Winnipeg area - here in Halifax which is a University town there are plenty of unemployed tech people. Not necessarily programmers but lots of people with hi-tech skills.

If you pay enough to attract a good person, he/she will do the work of three unmotivated mediocre ones. I don't know when you were getting $5.25 but that's less than minimum wage (USD) here now. That's what diswashers get and they don't have to carry a beeper. I get between $45/hr and $65/hr (USD) depending on which of the two local markets I'm in. So, when do I start you cheap bastard? :-D
