Seattle MVP Conference

I reckon that a lot of people don't know this is here. I say email them and see what happens. This is Christian at the airport, BTW.
Well, if no one else turns up - there's still 3 people from 3 different continents - one from Australia, one from India (Asia) and one from Canada (North America). It can't get more **continentally** cosmopolitan than that, can it? Unless we can get Paul Watson to show up too :-) BTW Mike Dunn may make it too - though I believe he is staying with a cousin rather than at a hotel. Nish

ccording to this[^] your hotel is 25 minutes away from the airport, so you should be there by 10 pm. For some reason it seems that the three of us, you, Christian and myself, are the only ones who want to meet. Seems kind of weird that none of the many locals or other MVPs who frequent this site have responded so far. As Christian is already on his way and will not see this until he gets to Seattle he is now out of the planning loop. So I say we meet on Wednesday the 28th of September for dinner and drinks at a restaurant in Bellevue, close to your hotel. I say 7:00 pm for dinner, and anybody who comes into town can later in the evening can join us as the evening progresses. If we can find a restuarant/lounge that open til 1 am that would be perfect. I am almost tempted now to send a private email to one or two people who I know are local to just get a restaurant recommendation, unless someone speaks up in the next 24 hours or so. It is kind of difficult to arrange this if no-one responds with any ideas:sigh:

Wednesday night is fine for me (I haven't looked at the MVP schedule lately - hopefully the summit doesn't go that late). I'll take a shuttle from the conf. to Nish's hotel. I don't have a laptop so I won't have my own net.access... I'll probably be able to bum someone's laptop for a few minutes at a time to check this forum, but just in case, you can reach me on my cell at [baleeted]. I'm flying out of LA tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon so I'll be settled in my hotel tomorrow evening. Anyone's welcome to call if you want to meet up. :) --Mike-- Visual C++ MVP  LINKS~! To anyone attending the MVP conference, or who lives in the general Seattle area, who would like to get together for a bit this is the place to post ideas. The ideal time would be for dinner and drinks on the 27th of september, the day before the conference is supposed to start. If anybody knows of a good restuarant/lounge where everyone could meet speak up please. Lets firm up the date, time and location so people can make plans.

We meet for dinner at 7:00 pm. Anyone who comes into town later that night (Nish) can join us when they get into town. The place is open until 1:00 AM so I am planning on staying till closing unless everyone else leaves sooner. Anyone who reads this and wants to come, please respond so I know how many people. If the group gets too large I may have to make reservations.

Plan looks good to me, PJ. I presume you have a cell#, so could you please mail the number to nish#voidnish.com [unless you don't mind posting it here in public]. If I can call you, it'll be easier to sync up once I get out of the airport.

Nish pointed me to a review of the Brewery and it said they have loud music and allow smoking, so I won't be going there. Nish, there is an MVP dinner on Wed night, and Mike is talking about meeting on Wed. I was assuming we'd meet tomorrow. Do you want to call Mike to see if that's possible for him ? Is it still OK for you ? Christian Graus - Microsoft MVP - C++

I am all for meeting tomorrow, but Nish is not coming in til Wednesday, that is why I thought Wednesday would work better. Also Mike does not like the idea of meeting at the Rock Bottom as I suggested below. I am open to anything, Just someone make a decision. My decisions don't seem to be the right ones.:sigh:

Unfortunately I have a lunch meeting here on Wed that I can not skip or reschedule. I am free tomorrow night though.

Very keen. Now we just have to find a place that everyone is happy with. I posted on the lounge[^] a couple days ago for a place, and David Cunningham gave a short list. How about one of those. I original dismissed them because they closed to early for Nish to make it. But if we meet tuesday, then Nish won't be there anyway. Sorry Nish, looks like we are going to miss each other this time.

Sorry I'm not more knowledgible about such things, as I now live in the area (since February). With two little kids, most of my exploration has been parks, zoos children's museums and the like. I kind of agree with Mike on the loud and smoky places not being all that attractive. I have been to The Rock Bottom and even during the early afternoon, it was nearly impossible to have a conversation there because of the noise. I don't think smoky is such a problem, because Washington has followed California's progressive ways of trying to stomp out smoking as much as possible. What would be ideal is a relatively quiet and relaxing place that also has  :) Too bad coffee shops don't do that in America. I'll try to do a little last minute research tomorrow, if that's not too late. I assume since this thread is a few hours more recent than "the plan" thread, that the Rock Bottom plan is still not concrete? Matt Gerrans

I am ambivelant, the only detail that needs stressing is that I have no transport, any plan that is not near my hotel will require me getting some sort of lift. The $#%$#(( hotel seems to have precharged $1000 to my card, leaving me a bit short, so I don't want to spend a fortune on taxis. Christian Graus - Microsoft MVP - C++

Here's some suggestions from my uncle who works at MS and thus lives in the area: (PJ I already mailed you this, I'm posting it for the other folks to see too)
You are in the heart of Bellevue, so there are plenty of reasonably priced chain restaurants like California Pizza Kitchen, Red Robin (Bellevue Mall), Rock Bottom Brewery (pretty close), etc. in that area. If you have cars there is a pretty nice place in Kirkland that is about five miles away by surface streets called Waimea Brewing Company. It has a nice water view of Lake Washington. There is also the "best in Seattle" award winning Barbecue at Dixie's Barbecue "near you", but you would need some direction to get to it. It is a Microsoft cult favorite and really quirky, but a blasat. No website that I am aware of.
I highly recommend California Pizza Kitchen. Not sure about Red Robin - I've heard the name before but I can't say I've ever seen one in LA. --Mike-- Visual C++ MVP  LINKS~! Ericahist | 1ClickPicGrabber | NEW~! CP SearchBar v3.0 | C++ Forum FAQ You cannot stop me with paramecium alone!

I am landing Wed night around 8 PM - so by the time I get to my hotel check in and get out, it'll be past 9:30. It's easy for Mike, you and me to meet - we'll have lots of opportunities during the summit - in fact, since we are all VC++ MVPs, the breakout day - we'll all be in the same hall for a full day and probably dinner too. Meeting PJ is the main idea here. He is available on one night - either Tues or Wed. Since I arrive Wednesday night, it'd be cool if we could all meet on Wed. How about after 10 PM? By then, the MVP dinner will be over. PJ, CG, Mike - is this OK with you?

PJ Arends wrote: I am open to anything, Just someone make a decision. My decisions don't seem to be the right ones. See my reply to CG. Basically I am free for Wed night, you are free and Mike too (if we choose a non-smoker place). CG has the MVP dinner till 10 PM, so we can probably, meet after that. Since CG'll be jetlagged for a few days, he's gonna be up all night anyway, so a late night should be okay for him. I think the best plan is for you, Mike and me to meet up around 9:30 and CG joins us after his MVP dinner thingie. We still need to find a place, but once we are together at a single point, at worst we can cab to some place, can't we?

Date : Sep 28 2005 Time : After 9:30 PM I hope this is OK with everyone. Now to pick a pub/restaurant to meet at - I leave this to Mike and PJ who'll know the area better than CG and me. In fact, if we are still undecided about the final meeting place, we could all meetup somewhere and then quickly decide on where to go and take a cab (or PJ may have a car).
