After all the comments about how badly the Katrina evacuation was bungled by the Democrats, I'm surprised the same posters are not gloating over the success of the Reps in Texas ...

People should take some responsibility for there own situation and not expect the government to handle everything. Unfortunately the great evil of urbanization has created multi millions of people who expect others to do there dirty work. A while back when I asked here at CP about peopls own survival plans in times of disaster it was surprising to see that even bright CPians seemed to have the attitude it won't happen to me. - Only with deurbanization will human kind survive. Stan Shannon wrote: If you will check, I'm sure you will find that not a single republican blamed anyone until the democrats renewed their anti-Bush paranoia using Katrina rather than Iraq I am not all that sure but I don't have the time or really even care that much. In fact I think that the board itself probably contradicts that statement because there were pages and pages of posts, and now that the shoe is on the other foot, no one has much to say about it. :-) But my point was not who started the last pissing contest anyway. The point was that people went on and on ad nauseum about response to Katrina = Democratic officials, and my point now is that response to a potential catastrophe does not appear to show much partisanship. :-)

That is absolute bullshit. The left launched into Bush immediately at the very first opportunity - almost as if they had the entire scenario written and ready to play out given the first possible opportunity - like they were hoping and praying something like this would happen so they could attack. It is almost amazing how the left always gets to have their cake and eat it too. It was state based incompetence that lead to most of the problems in Louisiana, just as was the case in Texas. The reason no one is posting about Texas is because nothing of any consiquence resulted from that incompetence. Neither incident had much at all to do with the ability of the federal government one way or another. Yet, here you stand, after Bush was savagely attacked from every liberal quarter and blamed for every possible evil in the left wingnut play book from infrastructure failure to genocide and now you want to make the issue about the fact that a few of us pointed out that, gee, maybe we should be a little more fair about spreading the blame to those who actually deserve it. I think you and most others of your ilk were hoping for another Katrina like disaster for another opportuntiy to further demonize the President Not being given that, you fall back on plan B and try to make it appear as if those of us who pointed out the obvious in the Louisiana situation are now hypocrits. Well, dude, that is a fucking pathetic tact. It is you who are not only a hypocrit, but a ghoulish, cowardly, zealot waiting for people to die to further promote your agenda. The people I work for live in Texas. I fly out there for two weeks every two months. I cherish life. I have concerns for my employers my associates and my friends. Go back and read my comments in this thread. Pretty mild. Then re-read your most recent rant. It's not just over the top - it's off the fuckin' charts. Your comments are WAY out of line. You don't know me. You don't know shit about me. You are the one who denigrated this to an outrageous personal attack - ghoulish? Work it out with yourself - I've said nothing on this forum to justify your attack. -- modified at 23:50 Saturday 24th September, 2005

An event like this is uncommon enough that it's ineffective, rather: stupid, for everybody to be prepared to handle it alone. mere statistics. people with higher income telling those on dead-end jobs to "take responsibility for themselves". Not that I'm against that notion as such. But at that time, and that place, it's a disgrace.

                      (1) keep that for the tax collector. I wasn't going for your money ;) (2) As I said, I don't care if it's the government or John Wayne. But I am sure for everyone without (functional) car left behind, there was one car moving out that could offer a seat. But it seems that everybody assumed "these people are someone elses job".

I believe that everyone should try to HELP the less fortunate. However the less fortunate must make some effort themselves. Eg., if driving out of a impending disaster area with an empty vehicle I would certainly offer a ride to those without locomotive capacity. But I would not take kindly to filling my vehicle up with suitcases of crap. Regardz Colin J Davies The most LinkedIn CPian (that I know of anyhow) :-)

I am impresseed by your preparations :) Having a cash and gas reserve... that's excessive luxury when you don't know how to make ends meet next week. Even if they were so considerate, it's priority would be 12 points behind "end of money". I know that those who complain loudest are usually those who don't have a reason to. But discarding those who really need help in such a situation sucks.

I don't believe that the evac did go all that well. People were stuck in grid lock for up to 24 hours, even though the Houston area has a much more well developed highway system than Louisiana does. Also many of the poor in Houston and elsewhere without transportation were left behind. In any case, this thing isn't over with yet, it is still a major storm that is going to cause tremendous flooding. Nothing to brag about (unless you just happen to be of the opinion that it is just another example of the utter futility of ever expecting government, democrat or republican, to get it right.) Well having lived in Houston for q while and living in Dallas now I would like to hear just an outline of your plan to evac a city the size of Houston. Fourth largest city in the US. Could not go to the East and there being not much to the West everyone had to go North. Look at the highways and resources available. Just what else could the Gov do that they did not. I have heard that they should have made I-45 one way north sooner than they did. A neighbors son is a DPS officer and he was telling us Sunday just how difficult it is to do this and I was amazed at the details involved - something like blocking over 1500 access roads and a bunch of other things. Anyway I am waiting for your evac plan with great anticipation. Just how to move about 3,000,000 people from harms way - in four days - yea - let me know. Richard Suppose you were an idiot... An event like this is uncommon enough that it's ineffective, rather: stupid, for everybody to be prepared to handle it alone. I do`'t care much if it's John Wayne or the Government, but since we have the latter anyway, why not? ColinDavies wrote: it won't happen to me Typical reaction to things yo cannot cope with. You can tell that everyone who didn't take precautions for getting away. But you also have to tell this everyone who rather packed his posessions than a someone without means to escape.

After all the comments about how badly the Katrina evacuation was bungled by the Democrats, I'm surprised the same posters are not gloating over the success of the Reps in Texas ...

It might be because the mayor of Houston, Bill White, is actually a Democrat (the mayor of Galveston may be too, I'm not sure).

I wasn'nt bitching about anything, only pointing out the obvious. I honestly believe that both the reaction to Katrina and Rita are about as good as we can ever expect government to get. Mistakes are always going to be made. My only point was that the left's use of Katrina to bash Bush deserved a response and that it is yet more proof that the democrats build their constituencies on fear and paranoia. Any place you find a pile of dead, you will find a democrat using it as an excuse to balme a republican. They are like buzzards circling for carrion. "Capitalism is the source of all true freedom."
