Rita Evac?

I am impresseed by your preparations :) Having a cash and gas reserve... that's excessive luxury when you don't know how to make ends meet next week. Even if they were so considerate, it's priority would be 12 points behind "end of money". I know that those who complain loudest are usually those who don't have a reason to. But discarding those who really need help in such a situation sucks.

Not necessarly true since not everyone can afford lawyers or spokepersons to speak for them.

I don't believe that the evac did go all that well. People were stuck in grid lock for up to 24 hours, even though the Houston area has a much more well developed highway system than Louisiana does. Also many of the poor in Houston and elsewhere without transportation were left behind. In any case, this thing isn't over with yet, it is still a major storm that is going to cause tremendous flooding. Nothing to brag about (unless you just happen to be of the opinion that it is just another example of the utter futility of ever expecting government, democrat or republican, to get it right.) Well having lived in Houston for q while and living in Dallas now I would like to hear just an outline of your plan to evac a city the size of Houston. Fourth largest city in the US. Could not go to the East and there being not much to the West everyone had to go North. Look at the highways and resources available. Just what else could the Gov do that they did not. I have heard that they should have made I-45 one way north sooner than they did. A neighbors son is a DPS officer and he was telling us Sunday just how difficult it is to do this and I was amazed at the details involved - something like blocking over 1500 access roads and a bunch of other things. Anyway I am waiting for your evac plan with great anticipation. Just how to move about 3,000,000 people from harms way - in four days - yea - let me know. Richard Suppose you were an idiot... An event like this is uncommon enough that it's ineffective, rather: stupid, for everybody to be prepared to handle it alone. I do`'t care much if it's John Wayne or the Government, but since we have the latter anyway, why not? ColinDavies wrote: it won't happen to me Typical reaction to things yo cannot cope with. Are you prepared for a nuclear attack, Colin? ;) ColinDavies wrote: People should take some responsibility for there own situation and not expect the government to handle everything This cuts both ways. You can tell that everyone who didn't take precautions for getting away. But you also have to tell this everyone who rather packed his posessions than a someone without means to escape.

After all the comments about how badly the Katrina evacuation was bungled by the Democrats, I'm surprised the same posters are not gloating over the success of the Reps in Texas ...

Millions of people living freely in a given area are never going to be easily evacuated in a short amount of time. Certainly if we lived in a less free, more strictly regimented society than it would perhaps be possible. But, frankly, I think I would rather take my chances with the weather. I wasn'nt bitching about anything, only pointing out the obvious. I honestly believe that both the reaction to Katrina and Rita are about as good as we can ever expect government to get. Mistakes are always going to be made. My only point was that the left's use of Katrina to bash Bush deserved a response and that it is yet more proof that the democrats build their constituencies on fear and paranoia. Any place you find a pile of dead, you will find a democrat using it as an excuse to balme a republican. They are like buzzards circling for carrion. "Capitalism is the source of all true freedom."

Stan Shannon wrote: They are like buzzards circling for carrion AMEN to that. I thought that you were jumping on the current bandwagon that the Gov. was at fault ( read GW Bush ) and should have made sure that every poor individual in N.O. should have been contacted by FEMA withing 30 min or so and escorted out of town in a limo or some other suitable vehicle, provided with several thousand dollars to help them over their ordeal, given rent free housing and furniture, free medical , etc.. while those that are not so fortunate as to be poor have to pay out of pocket. My apologies. Richard Suppose you were an idiot... And suppose you were a member of Congress... But I repeat myself. --Mark Twain

personal experience: those that really live on nothing are much more quiet and "shy" than those that still have somethingbut think they "deserve" more because someone else has.
