They ask you. You can't do anything about it directly, but the point of the MVP program is to reward people who provide a lot of support in online communities. So, if you want to increase the odds that you'll be asked....

How's your finger dexterity been since becoming an MVP? Sounds like some sort of diseased growth. ;P My website Traceract Understanding Simple Data Binding Diary Of A CEO - Preface

Yes, they can - though it's a little silly in my opinion. Goes against the concept of volunteering community help expecting no return.

Hmmm, the MVP FAQ says this now :- Individuals are nominated to be considered for MVPs by their peers or Microsoft based on activities in the offline or online technical communities. It doesn't say people can nominate themselves. But I am sure I've seen a link to a document template for people who wanted to nominate themselves.

I figured it out. The India MVP programme allows self-nomination :-) Here goes :- You can nominate yourself by filling in the nomination form, which will be made available at http://www.microsoft.com/india/mvp as soon as the nomination process begins, and e-mailing it to indiamvp@microsoft.com. And I was worried my memory was beginning to fail me :-)
