OK, I see what you mean now. However, as Brian indicated, the notion that the process can keep up with our exploitation of it is a bit of a stretch. Oil is certainly a limited resource. And even if there is a lot more of it out there than we have yet discovered, all the easily discovered, easily extracted and easily refined oil is long gone. The harder it becomes to find it, extract it and refine it the more expensive it will become. So simple logic dictates that we really do need to begin looking into alternative fuels, which I think will happen naturally as those alternatives become economically competitive with oil. I don't think it could either. But we don't know where all the oil is. New sources are discovered at varying depths. We are sitting on quite a bit in Texas but the only time they drill is when oil prices are high because the 'costs' here are so much more than in the middle east. The supply is going to last a while which makes me believe that pushing for alternatives is going to take longer than most would like. But at least there is a push! I may not see it in my lifetime but eventually it will come. I'm hoping for something like the transporter from StarTrek! Make traffic jams obsolete! ed ~"Watch your thoughts; they become your words. I really want to someday. I want to dive on that big reef you guys have. How come the gun ban is not having the desired effect? OBSERVABLE FACT AFTER 12 MONTHS OF DATA * Australia-wide, homicides are up 3.2%. * Australia-wide, assaults are up 8.6%. * Australia-wide, armed-robberies are up 44%. (yes, FORTY-FOUR PERCENT) * In the state of Victoria, homicides-with-firearms are up 300%! * The steady decrease in homicides-with-firearms that occurred during the previous 25 years became an increase in the last 12 months. * The steady decrease in armed-robbery-with-firearms that occurred during the previous 25 years became an increase in the last 12 months. * There has been a dramatic increase in breakins-and-assaults-of-the-elderly. * At the time of the ban, the Prime Minister said "self-defense is not a reason for owning a firearm". * From 1910 to present, homicides in Australia have averaged about 1.8-per-100,000 or lower, a safe society by any standard. * The ban has destroyed Australia's standings in some international sport shooting competitions. * The membership of the Australian Sports Shooting Association has increased by 200% in response to the ban and in an attempt to organize against further controls, which are expected. * Australian politicians are on the spot and at a loss to explain why no improvement in "safety" has been observed after such monumental effort and expense was successfully expended in "ridding society of guns". Their response has been to "wait longer".

I gave you my opinion. If crime is increaing here we should deal with it before we look for a pointless fight overseas. Do you think more guns in our society will help? I doubt it.

Well here in the states, where ever they passed stricter gun laws, crime has gone up. And where they loosened gun laws, crime has gone down. It seems that the bad guys ignore laws, so passing laws only keep guns away from people you dont have to worry about.

and 95% of statistics quoted are made up on the spot. You want to give me stats you need to back them up. I dont beleive a word of it. Here are some facts New Harvard University Study Shows Direct Link Between Gun Availability And Gun Death Among Children in 1996 there were 44 children and teens 19 years of age and younger shot and killed with firearms in Colorado # In 1999, 4,174 women were killed with firearms. The majority of women died by suicide (2,120 females), while 45 percent died by homicide (1,884 females). from above link.....From 1976 to 1999, approximately one third of female homicide victims were killed by an intimate partner. From 1990 to 1999, nearly two thirds of female victims of intimate partner homicide were killed with a gun. 9) The risks of handgun ownership far outweigh the benefits. In 2000, for every one time a woman used a handgun to kill a stranger in self-defense, 222 women were murdered in handgun homicides. 10) The cost of providing medical care alone for firearm injuries in the United States in 1995 was projected to have been $4 billion. from this site... he gun-related deaths per 100,000 people in 1994 by country were as follows: * U.S.A. 14.24 * Brazil 12.95 * Mexico 12.69 * Estonia 12.26 * Argentina 8.93 * Northern Ireland 6.63 * Finland 6.46 * Switzerland 5.31 * France 5.15 * Canada 4.31 * Norway 3.82 * Austria 3.70 * Portugal 3.20 * Israel 2.91 * Belgium 2.90 * Australia 2.65 * Slovenia 2.60 * Italy 2.44 * New Zealand 2.38 * Denmark 2.09 * Sweden 1.92 * Kuwait 1.84 * Greece 1.29 * Germany 1.24 * Hungary 1.11 * Ireland 0.97 * Spain 0.78 * Netherlands 0.70 * Scotland 0.54 * England and Wales 0.41 * Taiwan 0.37 * Singapore 0.21 * Mauritius 0.19 * Hong Kong 0.14 * South Korea 0.12 * Japan 0.05 somehow I feel safer without a gun

Then how come there are still guns in Australia? It seems the law did not stop the flow of guns to criminals. Look, I do not own a gun and to be honest, they scare the hell out of me. But, far more people die from knives. Are we to outlaw them as well?

There will always be guns, just as there will always be drugs, prostitution, violent crime etc etc The diffrerence here is if you have a fight with your wife you have to go to the seedy part of town to get a gun to blow her away instead of going to the cupboard. Gives you some time to think about it. Knives are dangerous but not nearly as much as guns. With a knife you have to get up close and put some effort into it. Do you think that guy that shot all those people at petrol stations a year or so ago in the states would have killed as many with a knife? It'll take more than your word to convince me that more people die of knife attacks than guns. By all means reply but Im done with this silly conversation.
