The talking about the cyclical nature of human civilization reminded me of a book I read, but I couldn't remember the damned name of it. After much searching, I found this site: The Fourth Turning[^] [edit:here's another site]http://www.bm.com/pages/pov/insights-gencomm[^][/edit] It's an interesting model on how society goes through defined sets of generational traits, and has for a millenium or so. What stage do you think you fit into? :) [edit] for those too lazy to dig through the site, here's a summary:

There are four major time periods in society:
High - a cultural renaissance of sorts - think post WWII america
Awakening - period of introspection and rebellion - think hippies
Unravelling - pessimism and decay of "cooperative society"
Crisis - a critical point at which survival of society is an issue

    There are four archetypes:
    Prophet -
born in High, adulthood in Awakening,
midlife in Unravelling, elder in Crisis - current Baby Boomers
    Nomad -
born in awakening, adulthood in Unravelling,
midlife in Crisis, elder in High - Generation X
    Hero -
born in Unravelling, adulthood in Crisis,
midlife in High, elder in Awakening - Generation Y
    Artist -
born in Crisis, adulthood in High,
midlife in Awakening, elder in Unravelling

    [/edit]

I guess then that the UK in the mid- to late-seventies was Crisis. 1974 (the year I was born) saw two general elections, the last electing the government that produced the "Winter of Discontent" when the dead were not being burried, and street cleaners went on strike among other things. Things changed in May 1979 when Margaret Thatcher came to power. "Overprotected as children, they become underprotective parents. Their principal endowment activities are in the domain of pluralism, expertise, and due process.", I don't know about the parenting bit as I don't have kids, but I was probably overprotected as a child. "As conformist ARTISTS replace Heroes in young adulthood during a High, they become sensitive helpmates, lending their expertise and cooperation to an era of growing social calm." Sounds about right - That's why I'm on this site. :-D

I think you can fit any theory onto any socity. With any time. Just an intellectual exercise to notice McCarthyism was a crisis, (post WWII), the 60s had a lot of development. The 70s had "moonings". I'm too bored with it to go on.

Needless to say I don't think much of it
