I have a question I'm sure will raise quite a few eyebrows but hopefully will cause some stimulating conversation... Yeah, right! :-) I'm taking an introductory college course in C++. There seems to be quite the debate raging in the class about the pronunciation of the data type char. The professor, who shall remain nameless, pronounces it just as it's spelled, char (as in char-broiled) :-(. Half of the class is now using that pronunciation while the rest of us are convinced it's pronounced kar (as in character) Anyone care to settle this raging debate once and for all? Regards, Paul Lyons ** Always remember, nothing is impossible for the man that doesn't have to do it! **

It seems odd to me that some people pronounce Char as in Kar when we already have the word 'car'. Would these people also say keese when they smile for the chamera, or read a Kapter of a book. Oh Isn't it a nice kange in the weather... so on and so on. Say Cheese, Gary.

I pronounce Character as Karacter, So if I am going to shorten it to Char, I call it Kar. But then again, I am Maltese, and we have some different pronounciations. This one I never figured out: Cache - Is is pronounced: 1) Cash 2) Keysh 3) Keyshe I have heard them all.... Jeremy. "Hey man, Taliban, Tali me Banana."

char is short for character the data 8 bit type. There is kar or car. We do it for the joy of seeing the users struggle.
