American Conservatism as Victimization
-
I've been thinking about this for a while, ever since I was home for Christmas with my politically and religiously conservative parents. While I was there, the guest host of the Rush Limbaugh show was going on about the recent tsunami near Indonesia. Recently, a UN official (U.N. Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Jan Egeland) had suggested that the West was being stingy with tsunami aid ( Link[^] ). The host was going on and on about how the US should withdraw all foreign aid just to teach them a lesson. Essentially, his argument was that the US was charitable, a major contributor to global charity, and no one appreciates it (especially not the UN). He also questioned why Muslim nations weren't major contributors to "help their own people". (Revealing the ignorance of the host, one caller showed that Muslim nations had actually contributed a respectable amount to tsunami aid.) It occured to me that much of the Conservative worldview revolves around victimization. In their view, they are the hardworking, self-sufficent, and moral, but are constantly harrassed, undermined, and underappreciated -- in effect, victims. What forces are they victims of? The liberal media, the big-city liberals ("who want to tax-and-spend, but distain the flyover area of the United States"), liberal professors, activist judges, an excessively litigious society and the lawyers who feed it, the ACLU, gays (who "undermine the institution of marriage"), environmentalists ("trying to promote the myth of global warming, undermining our oil-based economy, and caring more about the spotted owl more than a hardworking lumberjack"), affirmative action ("giving jobs and education to blacks and latinos even though we're more qualified"), feminists, welfare ("government forcably takes my money through taxes to give to lazy bums who need to get a job"), France and the UN ("who undermines American power and the ability of the nation to protect itself"), atheists and secularists ("who take our Christian foundation and heritage from the schools and government"), and Muslim terrorists. I can't say that I completely disagree with all their complaints. However, the conservative media very much plays on these themes by promoting stories where conservatives are very much victims, producing a skewed view of how often these things are happ

 EDIT - so the real problem is that the world is being victimized by conservative victimhood? "The Yahoos refused to be tamed."

I don't understand your point. Are you saying that 50% on my pay check for tax and obligatory welfare, social and health security are a fiction? Does it mean it only seems that this money has gone to the socialist goverment and that in reality it is on some hidden bank account waiting for me to get it back? :-D So where is the money? I mean, really. I want to stop this horrible victimization! You can trust me. Where do socialists hide it and when will I get it back? Sincerely, Tomaz

Don't normally think of musicals, but for some reason I imagined conservative pundits singing this song: Well either you are closing your eyes to a situation you do not wish to acknowledge, or you are not aware of the caliber of disaster indicated by the presence of a pool table in your community. Well, you got trouble my friend. Right here, I say, trouble right here in River City.... ----------------------------------------------------- Empires Of Steel[^]
