Being almost 100% Scots-Irish, I suppose my people left it all right at the water line in about 1718 or so. But then, the Scots-Irish were Americans before they ever even got here, so maybe I'm wrong about that. The frontier just gave them the freedom to finally be what they had always wanted to be - violent, illiterate, opinionated, xenophobic, racist, alcoholic trailer trash. "Capitalism is the source of all true freedom."

But I left out independent - very, very independent and self sufficient ... and brave... and tough ... never yielding or surrenduring or wallowing in self pity like those they left behind in Europe - American to the core. "Capitalism is the source of all true freedom."

The CBC did the same thing for the greatest Canadian[^]. IMO they picked the wrong guy. Terry Fox and Frederick Banting should have been the top two.

I was watching the Discovery channel the other night and an advert came up for the "Greatest American" poll. Following on with the other posts, we had a Greatest Briton Poll here in the UK too last Christmas. http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2002/11_november/25/greatbritons_final.shtml[^] I voted for Brunel, from the case made by Jeremy Clarkson. I'm glad he made second. Gracious in the face of defeat, [Clarkson] said: "Although it's disappointing, I'd like to thank everyone who voted for Brunel as it's still a tremendous triumph for engineering. "I reckon an enormous amount of votes from America helped win it for Churchill - Americans have once again interfered in our affairs!" In case you don't know, Jeremy Clarkson[^] is amongst other things a popular and very funny motoring journalist over here. He had a TV talkshow for a season in which he removed America from the map and threw it in the bin. He doesn't like America, Europe or the now bust MG Rover.

Seriously. Doesn't he reflect the majority (as seen in the recent election) opinion? Answer honestly! He may not reflect YOUR opinion, but I think he DOES reflect the opinion of quite a few, umm, Americans. ;P Marc MyXaml Advanced Unit Testing YAPO

Yeah, everyone in my house voted for Terry Fox. Take the poll again in a few years when the baby boomers have died off and you won't find Tommy Douglas at the top of the list anymore I gurantee it. When did health care become such an all-consuming obsession in this country? The whole thing is a bit absurd, the politicians cater to it, so does the media, fact is that for 99% of the populace the health care system works just fine, for the 1% that it doesn't we get 90% of the air time during an election.

It's the only thing the socialist have absolute control over, and they will make damned sure they don't loose control. Just imagine if someone actually paid to have their health looked after instead of waiting 2 years for an MRI. Scandalous!!!
