In a word: Yes In many more words: I wouldn't mind intelligent pop-under ads too much if it helped CP. i.e. Pop-under ads that:
- reloaded in one window, the same window (i.e. don't use _blank or _new for A targets. Use a window handle)
- did not reload every time I refreshed CP or went to another page. Mayber every 5 minutes or every 10 page reloads
- did not have huge animated images as the ad. Text or simple images will suffice
- do not automatically reload themselves when you close the ad window, wait the 5 minutes or 10 page reloads to do that
- do not, when clicked, load in the CP window. Rather load a new window and CLOSE the pop-under ad window
One good idea I saw before was that once you clicked a pop-under ad the window closed, the advert target launched and the pop-under ad window did not come back till the next day. Kind of like a "thank you for clicking the ad, you won't be pestered for the next 24 hours" intelligence. Frankly I would prefer pop-up ads as they are easier to close and not as suspiciously subvertive. However I realise that is the reason why pop-under ads are now so popular. Frankly (X2) I would pay a monthly subscription to CP not to have any ads :) Do you accept beer? hehe. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass Cape Town, South Africa "The greatest thing you will ever learn is to love, and be loved in return" - Moulin Rouge "In other words, the developer is dealing with an elephant, the accountant is dealing with a bunny rabbit." by Stan Shannon - 16/10/2001

I don't understand pop-under or other annoying ads. I'm probably in the minority but if a company uses annoying advertising tactics I will make a point of going to their competitor. Maybe the unwashed masses are influenced more the the subliminals such annoying tactics use... cheers, Chris Maunder (CodeProject)

What are pop-under ADs? You mean those ads that start off minimized and remain minimized till you click on it? Nish

Pop-up adds are the ones that open a new browser on top of the one you intended to visit * Ex: Pop-up example Pop-under adds are the ones that open a new browser window behind the one you intended to visit * Ex: Pop-under example (sometimes this links causes a pop-under, sometimes it does not, but I think you get the general idea) Jon Sagara "After all is said and done, usually more is said than done." -- Unknown

Yup those are the ones. Like pop-up adverts, only underneath your current browser window and not on top. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass Cape Town, South Africa "The greatest thing you will ever learn is to love, and be loved in return" - Moulin Rouge "In other words, the developer is dealing with an elephant, the accountant is dealing with a bunny rabbit." by Stan Shannon - 16/10/2001

I don't understand pop-under or other annoying ads. Neither do I. If a user is likely to click an ad then it probably actually makes it harder for that person to click it by using pop-under ads. If a user is not likely to click an ad then you can do whatever you want but they still won't click the ad. Have naked dancing girls or free cash, they still won't click the damned thing. Tricky, sneaky and underhanded tactics just make intelligent users less likely than every before to click an ad. I'm probably in the minority but if a company uses annoying advertising tactics I will make a point of going to their competitor My problem is that my webmail provider, email.com, has recently started using pop-under ads (three in a bloody row as well!). I like the email.com service and I have been using it for quite awhile. Now I have the dilema of either sticking with them and gritting my teeth every time the ads appear, or switch to another service which I don't know. If I visit a new website that uses pop-ups or pop-unders then I click the back button myself. One good advertising tactic which I don't mind much is the interstitial advert. Those are the ones that when you click on a link it shows a fullscreen ad in your main browser window for a few seconds and then passes you onto the page you wanted (just make sure the link you click on is not direct to the advert or you will get serious flame mail :) ). That I don't mind, of course I would prefer no ads but if I had to pick the best of a bad bunch that would be the ad type I would choose. It is a bit of a catch22 situation though isn't it? If you don't have ads you either have to go the subscription route or face an empty bank account. But start using ads and users will be driven away. Go the subscription route and only diehard users will stay. Sad isn't it? regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass Cape Town, South Africa "The greatest thing you will ever learn is to love, and be loved in return" - Moulin Rouge "In other words, the developer is dealing with an elephant, the accountant is dealing with a bunny rabbit." by Stan Shannon - 16/10/2001
