I have noticed a stack of yanks don't "get" either English or Australian humor, hence these posts come from Yanks who have no cultural acceptance of other humor forms. So let's say you post what you want, using your own idioms and cultural values. Let's suppose that post was insulting to someone from another culture. Then either: a) that person who complains has no cultural acceptance of other humor forms. b) you have no cultural understanding of how others would take your post. Australians and New Zealanders are not insulted by much, but other cultures can find some of the innocent remarks we make as highly offensive (or simply don't understand the humour). This is not an Australian site, or a Canadian site, or an American or Indian site. It's a global site, and many or the readers here have English as a second (or third) language so many have to take what's written as literal. You can either say 'everyone is stupid if they don't understand my humour' or you can realise that not everyone thinks like you. Cultural insensitivity goes both ways. Yes, it may mean either finding the lowest common denominator of communication, or being more clear about who your post is targeting (or what you are trying to say). cheers, Chris Maunder (CodeProject)

Sure I'm not perfect and there are a stack of Yank jokes I just don't 'get' at all. So I ask if I want to find out what they are saying, and somtimes I still don't get the humor. Comedians such as Robin Williams, Seinfeld, Ronald Atkinson, Benny Hill and others have made the transatlantic leap, but most comedians haven't. It's funny the private posts I have recieved have all come from low posters at CP not regulars. Sure Australians and New Zealanders have a far thicker skin when it comes to humour than other cultures. However I'm sure I'm just like you when I/we try to understand and tolerate other cultures. It was sad to see Nish get abused the other day (I believe he took it as abuse) for posting what he sincerly believed was a funny comment. I admit I don't get his humor 100% of the time but I certainly respect his right to enjoy that said humour. No matter what you ask people to do (don't send anonymous private emails, don't post programming questions in the forum, don't run with scissors) they will never do as you want - so instead of trying to suggest a solution to a problem that can't be helped I was trying to offer a solution to stopping the problem at it's root. But why not say so on the public message board area, why send me private messages saying my posts are shit. Huh, to me these private messages are from real wimps. Do you get them or don't you talk twaddle much, most of us do. One thing I like about John Simmons is if I or someone else talks shit he says so. And he has an arrogant demeanour, he doesn't go posting private messages. The same yanks who complain when we don't get their humour :) (maybe we should flood America with cheap b-grade Australian, Kiwi and South African sitcoms...) Do you get them or don't you talk twaddle much, most of us do. Well as John often points out I talk tons of twaddle but I must admit I have never received a private message beratting my post. I got a private message from Microsoft once telling me to stop bashing Microsoft Content Management *cough* bollocks *cough* Server on CP... (just kidding, Colin (Bowern)! :-D ) I think the old adage of "it must have hit a nerve" rings true with your posts Colin.
