Skinners/Developers Project Website
-
Several Window's application skinners are considering starting up a new web site devoted to getting skinners and developers together on coding projects for new/existing skinnable applications. The site would contain sections for code snippets related to skinning, full sample projects and ongoing projects. There would also be sections for skinners such as new project requests, a list of those willing to develop new skins for new skinnable applications, what apps they're willing to skin, etc. Basically, a site where anyone interested in Window's application skinning could come and meet/work with others with the same interest. I was wondering if there would really be any interest from the developer's side for such a site? Any thoughts, ideas, recommendations, etc, would be appreciated. If you'd like to express an interest in such a site, a message board thread has been started at http://www.skinbase.org. Cheers.

What benefits does skinning bring to applications? Does it not just bring in extra overhead for no gain except a pretty face? How are going to sway critical developers (like John simmons) that skinning is a good thing? Are there not other sites out there already devoted to this? How will you make your site a better "buy" than the others? Does not Windows Blinds and other apps like it already offer skinning ability on generic apps without any development knowledge? Why not push that side of development instead of trying to convert every application to be skinnable? redllar wrote: was wondering if there would really be any interest from the developer's side for such a site? You tell us! :-D Have you done research apart from this post and apart from a few buddies who also like skinning? I am not dissing skinning here, in fact I like skinning. I love Windows XP being able to use different skins. I am just being a bit of a devils advocate here so that you address all the questions and find all the answers before going ahead with your idea. I have often wondered how skinning works and a site like your idea would be a boon. Even so, cover all your bases :) regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass Cape Town, South Africa Do you Sonork? Paul, thanks for your reply. I appreciate your attempt to "play devil's advocate," but I'm not sure how to approach your questions; so let me give you a little background on the proposed site instead. The site is being developed by skinners, not developers. I personally have no input into the site. I just volunteered to "get the word out" to some app dev sites since I've developed a few skinnable apps in the past and knew of a few dev sites where questions about creating such apps have come up. The skinners putting the site together have been a part of the skinning community since its birth. If you know of and use WindowBlinds, or any other "major" skinnable app, then you will know their nicks. They are doing this simply because they want to create a stronger relationship between those that create skinnable apps and those that make skins for them. Their motives for doing so are varied; everything from wanting a specific type of app to skin to wanting an alternative to certain shareware skinnable apps to wanting to learn how to create skinnable apps themselves. If you still have an interest, I would like to suggest that you pose your questions over on the "Skinners/Developers site" MB thread at skinbase and see what the skinners have to say on the subject. Thanks again for your reply.

I have been writing Skinned applications for many years now for large companies. And I have patents pending on a lot of my skin concepts---it is how I make a living, I would enjoy seeing such a website so my attorney and I could see if anyone is violating my patents and copyrights.:-O Bill SerGio

Such a thoughtful and helpful post. If I weren't so bored by what you wrote I might actually laugh. Of course it would be AT you, not with you. :-O
