Anyone here ever informed the BSA about a company using illegal copies of software? Are you kept anonymous by the BSA? What are the chances of the company finding out? If your found out, how hard would it then make getting a job in the industry if you have a reputation for putting in your (ex)company?

Who here does not pirate or has not ever pirated software? I find it hard to believe any developer who says they have never pirated something or the other. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass Cape Town, South Africa Do you Sonork? I can honestly say I am not a pirate. The meer thought of months at sea with nothing to eat but rotting apples and salt, coupled with the occasional cooked captin from another vessel, made me disgard all hopes of a career in piracy a long time ago. However, I can also honestly say that I have never used a pirate copy of any software that I honestly believed I would buy, any further than me buying it. (if that makes sense?) I.e. I initially used a pirate copy of Windows 2000 before deciding it was better than Windows 95 (:o), as at the time it had only just been released to manufacturers and I wasn't going to stick with '95 long enough for the IT evaluation copies to come out. My current warez collection is (and this is an exact figure).... drumroll.... 40.4 MB, made up of 8 complete products, probably worth a grand total of about £200! And am I currently using any of it? Well.... no. I can't be bothered. One thing to remember with most piracy is that most pirates don't use what they pirate. I.e. I know guys with entire 40GB hard drives filled with stuff they've downloaded warez-style (these are the lucky bastards with broadband!), and yet that's all they do with it - store it. If I had broadband I would make damned sure I didn't abuse it. One thing worth mentioning here, especially as we are mostly developers, is that I occasionaly download pirate software (if sufficient demos are not avialable) to try out the latest version of XXX software and see what cool features or UI designs it has. I call it "idea fishing". I wonder how common this particular type of piracy is amongst us? ________________ David Wulff http://www.davidwulff.co.uk "I loathe people who keep dogs. Any application which does not have a 30/60 day trial version (with full capabilities, not some namby pamby "save disabled" trial, that sucks) I am "forced" to pirate and see if it is worth buying. If it is then you just whip out the credit card, punch in some numbers, get the serial and voila, un-pirated software. Here in India, legal software is far costlier than a whole computer. Thus most people use pirated software. Specially at home. The offices use legal software cause of software agency raids. Nish Sonork ID 100.9786 voidmain www.busterboy.org If you don't find me on CP, I'll be at Bob's HungOut
