You are getting confused, these were Danish pilots not American ones!

Years ago when travelling in Belgium, I saw a couple of F4 flying just above ('wild weasel' ones IIRC). I had never heard such lousy planes before (I should then remind our american audience that France got rid of the US invasion during the 60s, but it has also its own aeronautic industries to equip its air force, so we aren't used to hear US war planes). WTF! if the F16 is as noisy as the F4, there will be a reindeer genocide in Denmark.

The F16 engine is actually quieter, as long as you lay off the afterburners. The F117a at full thrust is actually louder than the F4 and that's before it kicks in an afterburn. But then the F117a will do post mach without an afterburn something the F16 only dreamed of. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. K(arl) wrote: It's weird coming from a 'stealth' plane! Common misconception.... Stealth skin. :) low radar signature. Sound travels omnidirectionally from a source. So, outside of tracking the sound constantly and trying to do a path prediction, sound is of little use. The F117a can also lower its engines to idle and glide for a time, which is how they make their appearances for parades here (now). The first time the F117a did a parade appearance for 4th of July, it was at full thrust because he took a downward angle toward the parade, then pitched up at the safety limit and poured on the thrust to take off even across the crowds.... It was quite a sight, you can see the engine glow in full sunlight, beautiful machines (I'll admit bias), but there were a dozen faintings and one heart related injury (luckily near the emergency teams that are required to be onhand at parades). The mayor then made sure that when the request came the next year, he asked if there was anyway that the plane could make a quieter flight above the parade. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau.
