5 days without power. 7 days without internet. The storm left 98% of Broward and Dade County residents without power. That is 6 million people. I know what it is like now to live under martial law. Curfew, checkpoints, alcohol prohibition, helicoptors making rounds overhead all night. Unpleasant , but I did not sweat it too much. I did not get hassled the few times I was out after curfew. The first two nights were amazing for stargazers. With virtually no light pollution and not a cloud in sight the stars lit up the sky like I have never seen. I never much cared for this activity but the view made even me want to get a telescope. It is great how social the local community gets when there is no power, no gas, not really anywhere to go. It has been a really exciting experience as well as thought provoking. All in all, I had a great time. And I'm back :) Yay! I speak in a little known dialect of English called Josh. It is the spoken language of all people governed by the sovereign entity known as Josh. Please do not try to correct it, as I speak perfect Josh. Legalize Marijuana

I did not see that! Thanks for the heads up, Mike :) It passed today. http://www.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/11/02/denvermarijuana.ap/index.html Of course , its just another small step in the WOD. The only real damage I suffered to personal property was somewhere around $300 - $500 in car dings and scratchs from the debris. I'm not even going to report it to the insurance because it I have a $500 deductable :( No sense in having an unnecessary claim.

Philosophically I agree with you. In practice, I would love to give you the opportunity to further consider this question you pose, but lets say you are standing in one of a few Miami low income 'project' towns that come to my mind, at midnight, with no police presence during this event. In this scenario, I imagine you would give your right arm for a curfew. I speak in a little known dialect of English called Josh. I can see your reason, and you highlight the issue in your response; Why are there areas where such draconian measures are needed. What is it with your society that makes this so prevalent? OK, parts of Paris have gone ape shit in the last week, but that is a very particular part of the area, and following a disaster, the police might concentrate their attention on that area, but to impose a blanket curfew over the entire region would be unneccessary, and intolerated. If the police tried that, the whole populace would come out and riot (Parisien history, and the French system, is BUILT on the people rioting against authority) Nunc est bibendum

Its not just the USA my friend. There are many regions across the globe that do not need even a natural disaster to erupt into chaos. Each situation has its own unique contributing factors, of which most likely no individual can detail them all with impunity. I hope you are aware you are asking a question that has no real answer. Its yours, mine, governments, some gods fault? Who knows. Probably all of the above :) It is currently unanswerable due to a lack of data. We all have opinions. But there has never been a utopian society that I am aware of in human history. If we implemented my Utopia it would be a burden on someone else. So if any answer I would give you to this question the problem is you , me , and everyone else has not produced anything better with what we have to deal with than the world that we have. I almost paid a lot of lip service to this question of yours, but I must go for lunch. Thats a can of worms and we all are responsible. Now my question to you. What is your point? Do you subscribe this social unrest and inequality of wealth only to America? Do you really pose these questions to further understand the various circumstances of poverty across the globe seeking detailed insight into the history and economics of the globe, than the USA, than further exploring regional into my particular locale? Or are you just breakin balls here? (ie "What is wrong with you people") I speak in a little known dialect of English called Josh. That is true, there are problem areas across the world. Take paris recently, it has sufered 7 nights of rioting, sparked by the death of two kids fleeing the police (they escaped by getting into an electricity sub station and got electrocuted!) This is similar to LA after the rodney king afair. Although, only the 'project' area of paris is afected, not the whole city like LA. But there seems to be a difference between the US and the rest of the world. Where other countries pull together, the US gets scared and imposes curfews etc. We saw the same thing in NO, police going door to door with guns, checking if people are K, and the local police station coming under fire. A week later, as I posted, in Belgium there were floods. The police, army al turn out with trucks, diggers spades etc and clear up the mess. There is no 'fraying' of the social fabric, just people working together to get things back to normal. So why is US society so fractured that it can fall apart so easilly? Is it that it just hasnt had enough centuries to form a fully integreated society? But, I am also breaking balls. Your country is classic, your society has deep problems, and there you are trying to tell the Iraqis how to form a country! Nunc est bibendum
