Difference between software timer and Hardware timer

Hi everybody I am working on embedded systems and came to know about the timer importance in this area. I get puzzled sometime by the software timers, why they are good compare to HArdware timer and interrupts as why they do save the Change in the CPU states. Can anybody educate me on this more.
