I am looking for a decent laptop under $1000... wants a) Decent hard drive b) Good DVD/CD writer combo c) Good screen d) Built-in wireless networking I realize that's not that much, but it's for the Spousal Unit. The dependant units may use it also. The last time I bought a PC was in 2000, so... any ideas? ............................. There's nothing like the sound of incoming rifle and mortar rounds to cure the blues. No matter how down you are, you take an active and immediate interest in life. Fiat justitia, et ruat cælum

I am a fan of the Toshiba Satellites. I have had mine for 3 years now and I also got one for my mother last year. I have not had any complaints at all.

My satellite is a 2410-S203. Again it is a few years old, so it does not have all of the features you mentioned. Specifically the DVD writer. I do know that the newer version have everything that you mentioned. Some are in the price range that you mentioned, when I bought mine it was around $1500 dollars. It has a 1.8GHz P4-M. Battery performance on laptops for me has alway been in the 1-3 hour range, depending on what I am doing. Basically I have never been satisfied with battery performance, so I would say make sure you have a power adapter nearby. Mine is also rather big and heavy - a significant concern for the wife and kids since they may not like that - I am big and I don't like they weight. Temperature wise - it worked fine while I was deployed for OIF. For the most part I used it in evironments kept around below 30 C, even though the temps were much higher. It also handled dust and sand quite well - of course I did not take it out during a sand storm. With the temps that you are looking at, expect poor battery performance, the heat will make operation poor.

I realy like my HP zvXXXX (I forget the exact model number). It is more of a desktop replacement than just a laptop. But, the 15.4 inch wide screen display is great and it 'feels' like a very solid machine. I'd reccomend against buying any Laptop from BestBuy or CompUSA since I have heard they are a bit reckless when they are unloading their trucks from former employees. Apparently they don't care if the box containing a shinny new laptop was droped a few feet. Hey don't worry, I can handle it. I took something. I can see things no one else can see. I have the Compaq version of the HP zvXXXX, the Compaq R30000Z CTO with AMD64, 15.4" widescreen monitor, and 1.5 Gb RAM with the 2yr Accidental Damage Protection option. Let me tell you, this laptop kicks butt. And, normally, I don't buy the support plans, but I did on this one and it paid off. Six months after I bought it, my wife spilled a glass of Chardonnay on it. DOH! Five day turnaround with them paying shipping in both directions, they replaced almost every freakin' component on it, and it came back just like new. It cost 1298USD. If you can scrape together the extra money, I recommend a laptop of the same model. "we must lose precision to make significant statements about complex systems." -deKorvin on uncertainty

Oh, and except for the crappy WinModem and the excellent 5-in-1 card reader on it, all the components work with the following OSs that I've installed on it: Windows 2000/XP/2003(i386/AMD64) (The modem and card reader work with these). Fedora Core 3 SuSE Linux 9/10(i386/AMD64) Mandrake/Mandriva (I don't remember the versions) OpenBSD 3.7/3.8(i386/AMD64)/3.9(i386/AMD64) "we must lose precision to make significant statements about complex systems." -deKorvin on uncertainty

My brother just bought one of these. I was really impressed by three things: 1) Very little heat generated 2) It's quiet 3) Display is incredible Blows my loud, overheating, cloudy displayed laptop out of the water. Bernie (Boom Boom) Geoffrion worked Atlanta Flames games in the 1970s with the splendid Jiggs McDonald. One night, Geoffrion said, "Jiggs, there are only three things to hockey: shooting and skating." McDonald said, "Right, Boomer. And what's the third?" The exasperated Geoffrion replied," Jiggs, that's the three. Shooting. And. Skating."

I have a zv5000 with the AMD64 3400+ processor and the 15.4 screen. I've upgraded it to 1.5GB memory and added a 7200RPM HHD and it rocks. It weighs a ton, but I only take it out of the house about once a month or so.

I have an HP Paviliion zv5000 Its a nice machine, but a little slow compared to one running a pentuim M processor (Dell D610 for example), but a nice screen and solid feeling. Its a hyper threade model though, so watch out for dodgy device drivers, you might see crashes you wont see on a single processor machine. Nunc est bibendum

I am in USA and price is aroung $900 after rebates. I am a strong AMD fan. I have bought/assembled more than 10 AMD based machines, all more reliable, cheaper and faster than comparatively priced Intel machines b/c I get to choose components :)
