Obviously, any clear thinking person would be compelled to conclude that Clinton's efforts, whatever they might have been, were not enough. Therefore, the logical conclusion must be that greater efforts are required. If Bush is, in fact, taking greater efforts, than he is doing the right thing by fulfilling his constitutional responsibilities as commander in chief. I fervently hope that is the case. The notion that our primary concern is protecting the civil liberties of every human being on the planet, and that no danger is sufficient to detract us from that single minded focus is clearly not the right thing to do. In fact, its just plain stupid. Its insane. The glaring reality continues to be that Bush haters are just Bush haters and nothing more. They are not brave defenders of civil liberties or the rights of man or anything of noble liberal purpose at all, they are just Bush haters. Nothing is more important than defeating Bush, not terrorism, not human life, nothing. That is their one and only goal, after that they have nothing to offer. They will only be happy when a socialist such as Clinton is going about doing exactly what Bush is now doing. They will turn a blind eye as they did for Clinton just so long as their precious little secularist/Marxist agenda is being implemented uninhibited by evil "neo-cons" (ie, anyone who doesn't think precisely the way they do). That is a beautiful drive. Every time I go back to Oklahoma I make a point to drive through the Ozarks. Actually, I know a lot of people in the heartland who detest Bush (the Scout Master of my son's Boy Scout troop, in fact), but I know of none who are saying "gee, we need the democrats to fix things". Invariable they want someone they consider to be a true conservative in the Whitehouse. So, yes, the heartland and the fringes are growing further and further apart culturally. I don't see it changing anytime soon. "Patriotism is the first refuge of a patriot."

Yeah, its difficult to defend that one from any political perspective. He certainly does not have conservative principles when it comes to the growth of big government. Still, his fiscal policies are not impeding the current economic growth we are seeing and his basic philosophy on how to confront terrorism is certainly something I support. But most of all, if his supreme court nominees turn out to be at least somewhat Scalia-esk, I can forgive everything else. The court has been the key objective of the conservative fight since the 1950's. If that is secure, the left is nothing but a hollow shell of its former self, and no longer a true threat, as the court was how it forced its political will on the nation. Without the court, the left will actually have to promote its agenda democratically, which will be suicidal for them. EDIT - or give it up altogether and go back to being the party of Kennedy and Johnson, which would be at least tolerable. I'd be happy if we would just concentrate on protecting our own, right here in this country. The idea that a war in Iraq is necessary and that Saddam Hussein constituted a clear and present danger to this country is insane, just plain stupid, wasteful, and pointless. Unless your point is to support government contractors, in which case "mission accomplished".

The correct analogy would be that if a fire continues to burn, you probably need more water.
Vincent Reynolds wrote:

That is prcisely why I support the president's politices and reject those of the left. What you propose is an essentially defensive response to terrorism, allowing it to be proactive while we are reactive, and treating it as a law enforcement issue, but at the same time tieing up the government's law enforcement abilities by crying about 'police state' and loss of civil rights everytime they do something to deal with the problem. So, to be blunt, you have no solutions at all.

If the basic political principles of the left, including the US democratic party, are not fundamentally predicated upon an inherently Marxist world view, then would you be so kind as to educate me on the intellectual foundation which the modern left is building upon. Give me some names, principles, ideas and ideals from which modern liberalism receives its nourishment. "Patriotism is the first refuge of a patriot."

What I am talking about is your propensity to complain about the things that have to be done in order to protect our way of life. If you think so many things are so wrong, stop complaining about it and do something, become a leader in the military or government and do something other than criticize what others are doing. Just because you have the right to complain about anything and everything does not mean that you should ignore your right to remain silent. You sit in your little online world criticizing but doing nothing. Correct me if I am wrong. Tell me about the personal sacrifice that you have made even once in your life for the benefit or even potential benefit of someone other than your self. Then I will accept you righteous opinions as something other than liberal BS.

I guess you would rather wait until Americans have to worry about roadside bombs willing driving to the grocery store or work, children being killed while playing, intermittent electricity preventing you from sharing your complaints about why the Pres did not do more to stop these problems. Unless it is found that Bush performed these wiretaps for personal gain (i.e. political or financial) then I do not think he violated the intentent of the broad powers given to the president.

What about our leader's propensity for f*cking up those things that didn't need to be done to protect our way of life. Can we complain about that, please, oh please?

Huh? I think most of us exercise our right to remain silent much more than you think. This administration is worthy of much more bashing than what I see on this board. I just think that after a while it gets old -- "Oh man, there they go again... *sigh*".
Bob Flynn wrote:

How do you know? And what do you do on this board? You defend this administration like it's perfect. Wake the f*ck up! We critize the government because we don't want it to suck! We genuinely care! We want to have the best government in the world -- one we can be proud to have elected. It's not a right vs left thing. It's a common sense thing. We want good leaders. That's all. And this is a general discussion board -- where people openly come and express their views about anything. If you don't like what you hear, do something about it. You're free to create your own "Bob Worships Bush" board where you can censor people who say what you don't want to hear.
