I personally don't think that it's a matter of people not being allowed to own and use guns for recreational purposes, but more a matter that there is a distinct lack of training for people buying guns on how to safely handle them (don't point a gun at anybody - even for fun - unless you intend to kill them, keep a gun in a safe position, finger off trigger, safety catches, maintenance, etc). Perhaps if more people were educated in the proper use of firearms we would have less of this. However, I doubt that the kind of people that go out hunting really care about the safety of the weapons they are using, nor perhaps the reprecussions on the victim of accidentally shooting them.

I think there are very valid reasons for owning a fire arm. Recreational purposes is not one of them however. I once went clay pigion shooting with some family on a farm in Devon. I spent more time being shown what not to do that I did shooting.
