I have been monitoring my cpu utilization, and with only the task manager open and running, I am seeing %30-%40 cpu utilization ? sometimes it will jump to %70, for just a second. Is this normal ? also sometimes the disk will read and write when I am not even on the computer (i have hibernate disabled). what is up with this ?? :(( where could i find some good diagnostic software, to let me know if I have some system resources leaking or whatever? system in question is a , AMD Athlon 550 mhz, 256 mb ram, windows xp pro, thanks in advance !! :) ================================================== Soliant - soliant@yahoo.com

does xp have a page file ?? NT does - my experience with NT would say that this is the cause of the disk activity - you would have to do some serious performance monitoring and stats gathering to figure out if this was the case ... you could try with a web search like "performance tuning xp" .. I used "performance tuning NT" and found a whole wealth of info out there, even some MS papers.. Im surprised about the other 30-40% utilisation, but again, I think you would have to run xp's equivalence of NT's performance monitor, and see what is happening in the background .. sorry I cant be more help Garth

You should check to see if your machine is being used as a server for something, e.g. Oracle or SQL server. Another thing that takes up stupid amounts of CPU time is using animated gifs /web content on your desktop. Dylan Kenneally London,UK

Thanks guys! Actually I slapped a 128mb ram, for a total of 256mb ram, and it has seemed to fix the problem, directly or indirectly. It seems now I have regular cpu utilization while system is at idle (%1). anyhow, best $25 I have spent this year :) ================================================== Soliant - soliant@yahoo.com
