So what is important about an anthem? The words, or the meaning behind them?

good question. the words and the meaning, for those who came before us and struggled for what we have today as a people. you just don't come to a country and say "hey, we're one of you too, see... we changed the anthem because we love this country" , bullsh$t. they don't know WTF it means, regardless of if they convert it.

A half-century ago, before the Twins moved to Minnesota, the Braves were based in Milwaukee. Naturally, those of my father's generation living in that part of the country changed the words of our anthem, out of love for - not country - baseball. I suspect there may be kids down in Atlanta still doing so. And even though this changes not only the words but the very meaning of those words, i seriously doubt it is meant as a put-down for their fathers, and grandfathers, and great-grandfathers who dug in and struggled for what we have today.

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand Between their loved homes and the war's desolation! Blest with victory and peace, may the Heaven-rescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.

I have to admit, i struggle to understand why it bothers you that someone would produce a translation for a song your clearly hold dear. Growing up, many of the songs sung in my family were hymns, long ago translated and adapted from the original German, but still sung with enthusiasm and a mind to the meaning behind the words. Perhaps you're right, perhaps there is no hope that the meaning of that first stanza's already somewhat opaque lyrics could be preserved through translation... But to me, even the desire, not just to sing but to understand our anthem, speaks of something more than a callous PR campaign. When our forefathers first set foot in this land, a long and hard journey behind them and likely a long and hard journey ahead, it is quite possible they knew little or nothing about The War of 1812, the effect it had on this country, and the marks it left. But who in such circumstances could fail to understand the meanings of Freedom, or of Bravery. And surely, these are the traits that shaped our nation, and that caused us to choose such a song for our anthem: the desire for freedom, and the bravery to work for it. Tell me that doesn't translate.

I know I have defended migrants (specially Mexicans) before in this forum, but I have to agree that this time they went too far. If people want a complete, fair migration reform, I don't think things like this will help. If there is already hatred among Americans, actions like singing the American anthem in Spanish or burning flags will only make things worse. I am all for an integral migration reform, but migrants, please help yourselves before asking for someone else to help you!

i hear you, but all due respect, there's just some sh$t you don't f'k with in life. one is a nations anthem. i understand and respect immigrants dream to work and be accepted in the USA. you don't show your "love" for the country by doing this. it's like walking into another country and talking sh*t about sensitive issues. maybe its time for me to retire, and move to a mountain and leave society behind.

So Tagore is a traitor? The Indian National anthem, composed originally in Bengali by Rabindranath Tagore, was adopted in its Hindi version by the Constituent Assembly as the National Anthem of India on 24 January 1950. It was first sung 27 December 1911 at the Calcutta session of the Indian National Congress. The complete song consists of five stanzas. The lyrics were rendered into English by Tagore himself.[^]

I think you pretty much summed up the way I feel. As a side, I don't think the ones here should be made legal though just because they are complaining loud about it. And I wished they make them come through the front door or get out, but that'll probably never happen. Really, I'm not going to move to Mexico and expect the country to change because I'm there. I'm gonna learn Spanish, the culture, etc. ya know. Jeremy Falcon
