Just wondering..... Computer Engineer | | Computer Science Which major would you suggest and why? I like writing programs and building computers sooo... which is more the jack-of-all trades in this department? "If you have faith and believe in your so called god, give me a gun and I'll let you see him."

Electrical engineering with a specialty or minor in computer engineering. At least then you can call yourself an engineer and mean it.

Science if you like theory, and engineering if you like application. I did a 50/50 mix, but got my master's degree in CS.

I majored in entomology (the study which is all about insects), and I've been working as a software engineer for 8 years. :-D During these years of working experience, I have seen many colleagues, who graduated from departments of computer science, computer engineering, and information management, failed in programming job. How to write programs has become part of their fading memory.

Come on! I'm not joking. Nor is there any scorn for computer science/engineering majors. I'm seriously talking what I have seen these years. Indeed there are some outstanding software programmers who have the computer science / computer engineering majors. But these are half of the world. There is another side of the world though. The reason that some students who have entered the computer science / computer engineering departments of the colleges is because they have not really realized what they really interest. They just get the grades which are above the criteria in the college entrance exams. There are various choices available like Electronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electro-Optical Engineering, etc. out there by their grades from the entrance exam. These various choices are dazing to those who just graduated from their high school life. They don't pay much efforts but just hope to pass the final exams in each semesters. "What about the future?" We asked some of them ... "I'll think about it after the graduation! :sigh:"

And I've seen tons of crappy programmers with no or unrelated degrees sucked into programming jobs just because there was excess demand in the early days. Many of those are responsible for the poor shape of the software scene today. At any given instant there are considerably more assholes than mouths in the universe.

This is so true during 1995 ~ 2000.

Many of these tended to program database client applications with VB or Delphi.
